One of the most decorated players in the Brisbane Lions’ long history, Simon Black, has confirmed that he will remain with the Club for the next two years as an Assistant Coach.
Black, who announced his retirement as a player less than two weeks ago, will now dip his toe into coaching under the guidance of new Senior Coach – and former premiership teammate – Justin Leppitsch.
Upon his retirement, Black became highly sought after by a number of rival clubs, which is no surprise given his intimate knowledge and incredible standing in the game.
But he has ultimately decided to call the Gabba home for at least another two years to help guide his former teammates in an off-field capacity.
Black’s new role will be largely responsible for the Club’s forward line.
He joins a relatively new-look Lions coaching panel which includes Leppitsch, Peter Schwab, Shane Woewodin, Murray Davis, Gary O’Donnell, Mitch Hahn and Leigh Harding.
Black said he was thrilled to be able to commencing his coaching career with the Lions.
“It was an incredibly difficult decision for me to retire, but has been made that much easier knowing that I could still stay involved with the Club in some capacity,” Black said.
“I took some time to weigh up my options, but the lure of staying in Queensland with the Club I love ended up being too hard to ignore.
“It’s certainly going to be a different sort of experience, but I’m really excited about the challenge.
“I’m obviously passionate about helping deliver more success to this great Club, so will be doing everything I can to make a good fist of things while I’m here.”
Leppitsch said Black would prove a wonderful addition to the Lions’ off-field team.
“He was naturally in high demand, so we’re thrilled that Simon’s decided to stay,” Leppitsch said.
“He’s is one of the most driven, skilful and competitive individuals I have ever come across, so there’s no better person for our players to learn from.”
“If his dedication to coaching is anything like it was as a player, then I have no doubt that he will have a long and successful career ahead of him.”
