The Brisbane Lions Reserves kept themselves within striking distance of the NEAFL top six with a clinical 61-point win over Gold Coast on Saturday – 20.19 (139) to 12.6 (78).
After a relatively tight opening term, the Lions were able to arrest control of the contest courtesy of an eight-goal second term.
“(Gold Coast) were really competitive and put up a good effort,” Development Coach Matthew Francis said.
“It took us a while to break them down. In the end, our more experienced guys probably got the better of their younger players.
“But they still managed to outscore us in the last quarter.”
The Lions fielded a far stronger side featuring 18 listed players, while the Suns were limited to just 13.
Please find below Matthew Francis’ appraisal on each of the listed Lions who played against Gold Coast last Saturday.
Brent Moloney | Returned to that classic in-and-under contested footy winning role. Shaped the ball beautifully from the contest. We’d still like him to cover the ground a bit more and get on the end of some easier uncontested possessions – that would add the icing to his game. He was the instigator of a dozen or more passages of play, and worked really well with Stefan Martin in the middle. Great to see him back playing that traditional style of game. |
Jack Crisp | Crispy played a bit more down back than usual. It probably wasn’t one of his better games, although he did a couple of nice things like bursting from tackles and delivering the ball up forward. He needs to keep working on things like sticking tackles, killing the ball, and forcing stoppages when required. |
Rohan Bewick | Had another great game. Combined winning the contested footy with getting involved in the flow of play and getting on the end of handballs. His delivery the ball nicely into the forward line. Picked up 32 possessions and played an all-round game. A highlight was one of his trademark 90m dashing runs from half back into the forward line – just a pity he didn’t convert the goal in the end. |
Stefan Martin | Stef was terrific. He competed exceptionally well. Played 50% in the ruck and 50% up forward. When in the ruck, he won 75% of his tap outs and was really energetic. Finished with 22 possessions. He got first hands to ball and set up guys like Moloney, Bewick and Lester from stoppages. His second efforts were outstanding. A tremendous second game back. |
Nick Robertson | Robbo copped a head-to-head clash early which took a little bit out of him. But in typical fashion, he worked through it and played what I would describe it as a ‘dour’ game. He needs to keep concentrating on owning an opposition at the stoppage, and sometimes gets sucked into watching the ball. But there’s no questioning he attacked the ball with the same Robbo-type vigour. |
Jordan Lisle | Played the General role in defence. Picked up 24 possessions. Took some good contested marks in packs, but most were setting up play from behind the ball. Used the ball pretty well. Jordy was really serviceable, without being outstanding. |
Daniel McStay | We put him down back again, but he was a tad inconsistent with his attack at contest. He’s been working on it this season, and did show some improvement later in the game. So he probably broke even in that aspect. He was able to deliver the ball inside 50 on occasion, using his natural run and ability – that was one of the real positives from him. |
Tom Cutler | Tom was really positive for us. Played for three quarters before being rested in the last as he was our senior emergency. He’s developing a great game, and using his run to find space. He also generally delivers the ball beautifully. He found 26 possessions in three quarters and was among our better players. |
Andrew Raines | Rainsey covers the ground really well. Played a serviceable game and contributed well without tearing the game apart. He uses the short kick well and gives us composure – he’s a really good leader in that aspect. He probably still goes against our flow of play a bit with his possessions. |
James Polkinghorne | Polks had 19 possessions playing mainly up forward and kicked 1.1. We probably needed him to turn up a little bit more in pack marking situations. He didn’t get into enough dangerous positions, and that’s where he has his greatest impact. Also sometimes tries to do a little bit too much at times. But he was still a solid contributor and had nine handball receives which shows that he was giving us drive and run. |
Michael Close | Closey played a really disciplined game. He took some lovely contested marks and kicked some good set shot goals. Probably let himself down by missing two relatively simple goals – he could have had five straight! But in terms of defensive pressure, manning marks, and tackling hard, he gave us a really strong performance. |
Jonathan Freeman | Jonno started the game with first two goals, and was exceptionally energetic. Then he can drifted out of the game a bit. At times it seems as though he has slow reaction times – that’s one aspect he needs to work on, along with staying in the contest longer mentally and being more proactive with body movement. |
Ryan Lester | Played mostly up forward and a bit in the middle as we’re trying to develop him further in other areas and add to his repertoire. Up forward he took some nice strong leading marks. On the ball he lacked a bit of impact with positioning and winning contested footy. |
Isaac Conway | Played one of his better games for the year up forward. Was really strong in contest and didn’t lose his feet. He supplied a lot of defensive forward pressure and capped off his work with three goals. It was good to see him get the reward. |
Nick Hayes | Haysey played a great game. He got us going when it was ‘on’ early. Took some lovely intercept marks, and won the contested footy when outnumbered. From defence he set up great patterns with his field kicking and spotted leading forwards a couple of times to help generate shots on goal. Brought both sides of his game together really well. |
Archie Smith | Archie competed well in the ruck. It was also pleasing to see him get a couple of handball receives, and use his acceleration to break tackles and deliver ball inside 50. His work around the ground was much better. Another positive step forward in his development. |
Jordon Bourke | Played up forward for the first time in a while and kicked three goals. He took some nice marks and was very accurate in front of goal. Playing forward puts Bourkey under a bit more pressure to cover ground and create his own space, as opposed to when he’s defending and following an opponent around. It will hopefully help him become a bit more proactive and run hard and intelligently. |
Sam Michael | Sam only picked up a handful of possessions, but took four really good marks – two of which were in strong pack situations. We know he can compete well in the air and is a dour defender and hard to mark against. But he needs to get more involved in the flow of play, work off players, and set himself to be used a bit more. |
