The Brisbane Lions have finalised the allocation of guernsey numbers to each of their six off-season recruits so far.

Trade week acquisitions, Dayne Beams (from Collingwood) and Allen Christensen (from Geelong) are set to follow in the footsteps of some of the Club’s all-time greats, after having their names already etched on the Number 9 and Number 3 locker doors respectively.

Beams inherits the Number 9 guernsey directly from the man who wore it more times than any other player in Club history, Ash McGrath.

McGrath wore the guernsey in 214 senior matches throughout his 14-year tenure with the Lions, including the 2003 premiership triumph.

Other notable Number 9s who now appear on Beams’ locker include: Matthew Rendell (164 games in the Number 9 at Fitzroy), Jimmy Freake (135), and Rod Vernon (119).

Beams had previously worn the Number 17 guernsey in 110 matches with Collingwood – coincidentally the same number his brother now wears at the Lions.

Christensen, who wore the Number 28 in his time at Geelong, will wear the Number 3 Lions guernsey that is synonymous with Club Legend Michael Voss.

Voss played 283 of his 289 senior games in the Number 3 (he played six games in the Number 56 during his debut season), over which time he led the Club to three premierships, won five best and fairest awards, and claimed the 1996 Brownlow to name but a few of his remarkable achievements.

Also featuring on Christensen’s new locker is Gary Pert (153 games in the Number 3 with Fitzroy), Brian Pert (125), and Arthur Batchelor (112).

He replaces Brent Moloney in the Number 3 locker, who proudly donned the Number 3 in 21 senior matches over two seasons with the Club.

Mitch Robinson
, who the Lions recently signed as a delisted free agent, will don the Number 5 after spending his first 100 AFL matches in the Number 12 at Carlton.

The Number 5 is another hugely celebrated guernsey at the Club, worn by the likes of five-time best and fairest winner John Murphy (214 games in the Number 5 with Fitzroy), ‘Superboot’ Bernie Quinlan (189), and two-time premiership player Brad Scott (146 games with the Lions).

Meanwhile, Hyundai Lions Academy pair, Liam Dawson and Harris Andrews, have received the Number 24 and 31 guernseys respectively.

Dawson inherits the Number 24 directly from the man who boasts the most game for the Club in that particular guernsey – Joel Patfull (182 games with the Lions) – while former Bears skipper and Hall of Famer Roger Merrett also appears on the locker.

Andrews fills the Number 31 vacated by James Polkinghorne, who finished just six games shy of becoming just the third player to have his name featured on that particular locker.

Finally, Father/Son selection Josh Clayton opted against wearing the same number his father, Scott, wore in 160 games with at Fitzroy (Number 40) in favour of the Number 19 vacated by Jordan Lisle.

The guernsey has previously been worn by notable players such as David McMahon (218 games with Fitzroy), Lions premiership ruckman Jamie Charman (129 games), Ron Harvey (127 games with Fitzroy), and Michael ‘Magic’ McLean (88 games with Bears/Lions).

No existing Lions player has requested a change in number.

That means six numbers are still available for any of the Club’s potential selections at the upcoming Drafts – Numbers 20, 29, 37, 40, 43, 46.

In other guernsey-related news, Jonathan Brown’s famous Number 16 will be retired for the 2015 season – much like Simon Black’s was this year.
