Not everyone will be ‘flying’ in the early stages of the Brisbane Lions pre-season campaign, with a handful of players still easing themselves back after nursing injuries over the off-season.
Thankfully the only significant injury to speak of so far has been Cian Hanley’s knee, which is still only in the early stages of rehabilitation after recent reconstructive surgery.
Another of the Club’s new recruits, Allen Christensen, is taking a cautious approach to 2015 after struggling with a back complaint with Geelong for the majority of last season.
“We’re really taking our time (after) my second back surgery. If I was still at Geelong, it would have been the exact same path,” Christensen said on Wednesday.
“I’m hopefully going to start running early next month. We just have to make sure that I’m really strong through my legs and my core to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again.”
Daniel Merrett is also still on the bikes following post-season knee surgery, while Trent West is up and running after undergoing a knee reconstruction in July and is expected to join the main group in the first month of the New Year.
Knee injuries are also keeping Stefan Martin, Luke McGuane, and Rising Star Lewy Taylor in the rehab group for the time being.
Matt Maguire has almost overcome his post-season ankle surgery and should return to the main group as early as next week.
Daniel Rich, Matthew Leuenberger, and Brent Staker, meanwhile, will be pleased to no longer be part of the rehab group, having spent the bulk of their 2014 campaigns there.
The trio have, however, been doing some modified drills in their first week back on the track as a precautionary measure.
