The NEAFL Lions (6.13.49) played a strong curtain closer at Metricon Stadium on Saturday night but lost momentum in the last term causing them to go down to the Gold Coast Suns (10.14.74) by 25 points.
The young Lions side started ofF the game strong from the opening bounce. Matthew Hammelmann successfully slotted the first goal of the game thanks to a quick break from a centre clearane.
The teams traded goals before a turnover resulted an exceptional mark at the top of the square from Eric Hipwood and goal gave the Lions 7 point lead into the first break.
The second quarter saw both teams play hard but miss crucial, opportunities. The ball moved from end to end with both teams not making any real progress on the scoreboard.
The scores were level with only a few minutes left in the term, Lions fighting to secure the footy. Brisbane’s hard work paid off with a tunrover allowing Ryan Lester to goal at the top of the square and lead by a point at the main break.
The Lions, started the third term well, kicking a goal within the first few minutes of the second half.
Both teams struggled to gain traction in the contest. The Lions missed a few opportunities to widen the margin but they managed to end the term on a high note scoring a goal in the final minutes.
The Lions began the final term with a five-point lead but couldn’t keep the momentum they needed to take home the win. The Lions didn’t lose hope, still fighting as hard as ever for possessions but the Suns dominated the last quarter, kicking four goals to none.
The Lions have the bye next weekend before taking on Greater Western Sydney in Round 6 at Coorparoo.
