Mitch Robinson will lead a young Brisbane Lions outfit in Burpengary on Sunday.

Robinson, 26, will be the oldest player in the Lions’ side to take on the Gold Coast Suns. He led the way in 2015 with his fearless attack and has been rewarded with the role of captain.

The Lions will open their pre-season campaign with 10 players in line for their first outing in the maroon guernsey.

Lions.com.au revealed yesterday that the Club will unveil their draft and trade targets.

No.2 draft pick Josh Schache will join fellow 2015 draftees Ben Keays, Eric Hipwood, Reuben William and Rhys Mathieson to debut.

Second year players Matt Hammelmann and Josh Clayton, along with off-season recruits Tom Bell, Josh Walker and Jarrad Jansen will also all pull on the Lions jumper for the first time.

The Club will rest Captain Tom Rockliff, Vice-Captains Pearce Hanley, Dayne Zorko, Daniel Rich and Daniel Merrett along with North Melbourne recruit Ryan Bastinac and ruckman Stefan Martin.

However Senior Coach Justin Leppitsch expects all will be available for selection in NAB 2 against St Kilda in Mackay.

In Martin’s absence Archie Smith will be given an opportunity in the ruck after his best pre-season yet. The 20-year-old has been under the tutelage of Martin for the past two seasons and will use Sunday’s match to impress early.

“I think he’s in a better place this year than he was last year to take it (the ruck role) on,” Leppitsch said.

“He’s got a great teacher in Stef Martin who’s been teaching him the ropes – he’s been doing really well.”

The Lions’ squad will be trimmed to 26 on Sunday, with an extended bench of eight players and no cap on rotations.
