In this week’s Vero Coaches Wrap, Danny Daly dissects Sunday’s loss to the West Coast Eagles in Perth.
Lions.com.au covers the main points below.
What worked well
- “Our ball movement and pressure and the ability for our players to press in defensively and cause a contest.”
- “Our run from behind – our shape and our spread and our ability to kick goals from the centre forward turnovers was a feature of our game.”
- We scored 100 points: “To kick 100 points over at Subiaco which I don’t think was done last year by any other club was a good start to the season for us by that point of view.”
Dan McStay
- “Dan McStay was a real positive for us in defence. We obviously had a really young defensive line this weekend. He had 9 spoils for the game, took four marks from opposition kicks. He had 12 possessions and five rebounds which is a great result for him. He was a real positive for us.”
- “It was a real battle for our defenders we had an average game age of 32 compared to West Coast’s 112. There was an 80 game difference for the Lions.”
Josh Schache
- “He had 9 possessions for the game, five marks, three inside 50s and four tackles which is a great result for him.”
- “He kicked two goals, one behind. He was filthy with his one behind because he puts a lot of emphasise on his goal kicking. It was good to see the boys get around him for his first goal.”

Areas of improvement:
- “West Coast kicked 26 goals which wasn’t ideal, so we have a little bit of work to do defensively in that area of the ground and also with our ball movement from the back half.”
- “There were some goals the Eagles were able to get through because of our ball movement and turnovers – these are areas of improvement for us.”
- “They (Eagles) kicked 11 goals from the goal square and this was contributed probably to some of our skill errors from the back half. We tried to take the game on and unfortunately it didn’t always come off.”
- “If we get our ball movement going and our defenders run from behind that’s what creates overlap and gets us scoring.”
