The Brisbane Lions have manoeuvred themselves into a really strong position for the future, according to General Manager of Football David Noble.
"As we said at start of the trade period, we’re open to all posibilities, and we think we’ve manoeuvred ourselves into a really strong position for the next two years,” said Noble.
“(We now have) Four picks inside 22, and an extra first round pick next year, and we’ve still got a day and a half to go.
"There’s still a chance that some things can unfold in our favour.”
The Lions today confirmed that a three-way trade had been done with the Gold Coast Suns and Port Adelaide which saw Pearce Hanley and draft pick no. 19 exchanged for a future first-round draft pick and this year’s pick no. 22.
This means that the Lions now hold picks 3, 16, 21 and 22 in this year’s NAB Natinal Draft, as well as a first-round pick in next year's Draft which the Gold Coast on-traded from Port Adelaide.
How the trade worked:
- The Gold Coast SUNS pick up Hanley and receive selection 67 from Port Adelaide
- The Brisbane Lions gain the SUNS’ second round selection (pick 22) and also secure Port Adelaide’s future first round selection in 2017
- The Power acquire the Lions’ first round priority selection (19) and the SUNS’ 30th overall selection
The Brisbane Lions also announced the re-signing of versatile defender Darcy Gardiner.
The 21-year-old was due to come out of contract at season's end but is now tied to the Lions until the end of the 2019 season.
Speaking about the signing, List Manager Peter Schwab said: “Darcy is integral to our side's defence, particularly after the departures of Dan Merrett and Justin Clarke, and he'll only continue to develop."
“Our strategy for the years ahead is to develop our talent and build a team that can win our next Premiership, and Darcy is very much a part of those plans.”
The Lions are still confident that they will secure Collingwood Defender Jack Frost, and with the Trade Period set to end on Thursday (2pm AEDT) are hopeful that more deals can be done.
