Daniher had another strong game, kicking two goals from 17 disposals, while Lachie Neale (30 and 10 clearances) became more influential as the game wore on, and Dayne Zorko and Keidean Coleman looked the most dangerous with ball in hand. Brisbane ended up generating 23 more inside 50s, winning the clearances by 16 and contested ball by 12 to thoroughly earn their win. The Saints battled hard but struggled to move the ball freely against an organised defensive set-up.

    Match Preview: Lions vs Saints

BRRRRRRRisbane this game is giving us the chills and for all the right reasons!

BRRRRRRRisbane this game is giving us the chills and for all the right reasons!

Our boys are back at the Gabba in front of a home crowd for the QLD Freeze.

So, rug up ladies and gentlemen as we plunge into the depths of this weeks Match Preview.

    Last Time We Met

    Last time: Brisbane 9.18 (72) d St Kilda 9.6 (60) Round 24, 2023

The last time our Lions faced off against the Saints, it was a tale of two halves that kept fans on the edge of their seats. The Lions prowled their forward half relentlessly in the opening quarters, with a whopping 34-15 inside 50s, but our accuracy was as elusive as a shadow, resulting in a modest 14-point lead after posting 4.11. After the break, the Saints came marching in with a blitz, kicking the first three goals to steal the lead. But with the scent of home finals wafting through the Gabba air, the boys roared back to life in the final quarter. Joe Daniher and Hugh McCluggage kicked critical goals that gave us some much-needed breathing room. Daniher was a standout, booting two goals from 17 disposals, while Lachie Neale turned up the heat with 30 touches and 10 clearances. Ultimately, the boys dominance was clear as they generated 23 more inside 50s, won the clearances by 16, and conquered the contested ball by 12. As both sides gear up for tonight's clash at the Gabba, fans can expect another thrilling encounter!

    Excited About

    QLD FREEZE!

The QLD Freeze will conclude a significant week for FightMND, starting with the annual Big Freeze at The MCG on the King’s Birthday holiday. This year marks the 10th anniversary of raising funds for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) research and care.

To celebrate, the Lions have launched a QLD Freeze Membership, which includes a Big Freeze 10 Beanie, a prime seat at the game, and general admission to two other Lions home games. Brisbane Lions Co-Vice Captain Josh Dunkley expressed his excitement about supporting such a worthy cause and praised Neale Daniher's relentless fight against MND.

The QLD Freeze at The Gabba will feature nine celebrities getting dunked into an ice-filled tank during Friday night’s match. Confirmed participants include former Australian tennis star John Millman, podcast duo Mitch and Leigh Drennan from We Got The Chocolates, Winter Olympian Britt Cox, reality TV star Adam Densten, AFLW coach Craig Starcevich, Queensland Premier Steven Miles, and Brisbane Bullets recruit Casey Prather.

    Match-ups we're keen for

    Lachie Neale vs Marcus Windhager

There has been plenty of chatter about this one Lions fans!

It’s safe to say after Lachie Neale’s match-winning performance over the Western Bulldogs last week (38 disposals, 10 clearances and two goals) we fully expect St Kilda’s Marcus Windhager to tag our two-time Brownlow medallist.

Windhager has made a name him for himself over the last fortnight after putting the clamps on Gold Coast co-captain Touk Miller and West Coast’s Harley Reid, helping his side to victory on both occasions.

Coach Chris Fagan fully anticipates Windhager to target Neale come Friday night stating " No doubt there'll be some planning around Lachie or maybe one of our other midfielders. Lachie gets attention most weeks, it's nothing new for us”.

No doubt this is going to be one to watch!

Match Report: Lions Roar Against Marching Saints

Brisbane survived an almighty final-quarter scare from St Kilda to win by 20 points at the Gabba on Friday night and keep its finals chances well and truly alive.

Brisbane survived an almighty final-quarter scare from St Kilda to win by 20 points at the Gabba on Friday night and keep its finals chances well and truly alive.

The Lions led by 37 points at three-quarter time but watched their advantage dwindle all the way to just seven points before a Logan Morris goal steadied the ship.

When Joe Daniher kicked his fifth goal of the night moments later from the junction of the 50m arc and the boundary line and Charlie Cameron followed suit shortly after, the home team had done enough to survive.

They won 19.12 (126) to 16.10 (106) in what became an unexpected shootout.

It squares their ledger at six wins, six losses and a draw ahead of a crucial trip to Port Adelaide next Saturday.

Daniher was magnificent for the victors, kicking his goals from 20 disposals and 13 marks, while Dayne Zorko (30) and Hugh McCluggage (26) were also decisive with their ball use.

The Saints trailed all night, but every time Brisbane looked like putting the game away, they fought back.

And unlike last week's win over Gold Coast, they released the shackles and played exciting football to give themselves a chance, with Jack Higgins kicking five goals.

Liam Henry's second half move into the midfield gave Ross Lyon's team a spark, while Jack Sinclair had his usual strong impact.

But the Lions were the better team for longer, intent on moving the ball quickly to get around the stout St Kilda defence.

They raced to a 31-point lead at quarter-time, shifting the ball quickly, with players taking no more than a second or two to move it on and restrict the Saints' ability to set up.

Unable to win a clearance – they trailed that stat 13-1 at the first change – Brisbane feasted on turnover, with Zorko often the architect, pinging the ball from half-back.

They were able to isolate their dangerous forwards, with Daniher, Morris, Cal Ah Chee, Cam Rayner and Kai Lohmann all kicking goals after marks inside 50.

What looked like one-way traffic early in the night ever-so-slowly changed in the second quarter.

Higgins lifted his team back into the contest with three goals in an eight-minute burst, including two bombs from 50m.

Brisbane had begun bombing the ball into numbers and the Saints were able to use their hard-running to find space on the outside and give themselves a chance at the main break.

Brisbane making a charge for the eight
For the first time this season, the Lions have reached parity with six wins, six losses and a draw. While they are still outside the top eight with nine rounds remaining, the past fortnight has shown they're on the rise. The midfield is as strong as ever and their potent forward line is back to its high-scoring best. An away trip to Port Adelaide followed by home matches against Melbourne and Adelaide presents a stretch of matches that could help define their season.

    The Windhager tag on Neale
There was absolutely no surprises to see Marcus Windhager go straight to Lachie Neale at the first bounce and spend all four quarters shadowing the two-time Brownlow medallist. Like he did last week against Gold Coast co-captain Touk Miller, Windhager niggled, scragged, grabbed and did whatever possible to limit his opponent's influence. For large portions, it worked. Neale had three touches in the first quarter and nine at half-time, but eventually worked himself into the contest to finish with 20 disposals, seven clearances and two goal assists to at least share the points.

    Dan Butler on report
We don't often see reports these days, but Dan Butler will be in the crosshairs of Match Review Officer Michael Christian after a second quarter trip on Lion Ryan Lester. With the veteran defender streaming through the middle of the Gabba, Butler executed a rugby league-style ankle tap to bring his opponent to ground. He was immediately reported for tripping.
