    Match Preview: Lions vs Swans

QLD vs NSW it doesn’t get much bigger than this!

QLD vs NSW it doesn’t get much bigger than this!

As it has felt every week for the last six weeks, there is once again a lot on the line. How does this affect the top four, eight, let alone the rest of the season for either side... it's anyones guess.

Well Lions fans, it's time to put it all under the microscope as we take a look into this week’s match preview.

    Last Time We Met

    Last time: Brisbane 13.19 (97) d Sydney 12.9 (81) Round 14, 2023

Yes, the last time we technically played the Swans was a preseason match in Blacktown that featured everything from a stadium blackout to red belly black snakes wriggling onto the field (yes you read that right). However, when it was for premiership points it was a gritty win under Friday night lights at the Gabba to snap a two-game losing streak.

Zac Bailey was lively, kicking 2.3 from his 26 disposals adding zip to a match often played in tight congestion. Lachie Neale (29), Josh Dunkley (28) and Will Ashcroft (23) were busy as our midfield fought hard against a never-say-die Swan brigade.

Also, who could forget, Jaspa Fletcher made his AFL debut kicking a memorable first goal that he and the Gabba crowd won’t soon forget. This Sunday two very different sides go head-to-head in a match-up that is shaping to be one of the games of the season. Like every other game this round, this game particularly will have great implications in shaping a congested top eight.

    Excited About

    Back at the GABBA!

As they say, there is no place like home and after a big trip to Perth, we can’t wait to entertain Lions members and fans as we return to a SOLD OUT Gabba!

The Swans have been the team everyone is chasing in season 2024 but our boys are ready for a proper state of origin clash with our cousin to the south.

It’s going to be a tough contest no doubt, but we know Lions fans will bring the noise with their best Liiiiiiiiioooooooooooonnnsssss chant to get behind the boys as they look to notch up another win.

    Match-ups we're keen for

    Lachie Neale vs Chad Warner

This might not be the only time these two go head-to head against one another this season. Both men are Brownlow fancies in what is shaping to be one of the closest counts on footy’s night of nights.

Nevertheless, until that night we get to see these two battle it out on Sunday afternoon at the Gabba. Lachie Neale has been in scintillating form averaging 29.9 disposals, 7.3 clearances and 6.8 score involvements. Neale was dominant in the Lions' 13-point win over West Coast last Sunday and polled a maximum 10 coaches votes in round 18.

Meanwhile, Chad Warner has posted equally impressive figures averaging 24.3 disposals, 3.9 clearances, and 8.2 score involvements.

You’ll want to grab the popcorn for this battle!

Hugh-ge Finish At The Gabba As Lions Pip Swans

It took every final second of play, but Brisbane has outlasted Sydney by two points in a gripping Sunday afternoon contest at the Gabba to solidify itself as a premiership fancy.

It took every final second of play, but Brisbane has outlasted Sydney by two points in a gripping Sunday afternoon contest at the Gabba to solidify itself as a premiership fancy.

Trailing by 14 points entering the final quarter, the Lions kicked four goals to two to win their seventh straight game, 11.13 (79) to 11.11 (77) in front of 33,924 delighted home fans.

In one of the most engrossing contests of the season, there were five lead changes in the fourth term before Cal Ah Chee's brilliant left foot snap settled the result with three minutes remaining.

Hugh McCluggage started Brisbane's final quarter surge with two goals inside 60 seconds, before Charlie Cameron capped a tumultuous week with a nerveless set shot from 45m to give the hosts the lead once again.

    00:39

But the Swans refused to relent, despite playing the second half without Dane Rampe (calf) and Tom Papley (ankle).

Jake Lloyd bombed a goal from 50m to reclaim the lead, but the Lions weren't done, with Ah Chee's heroics just enough.

Brisbane remain inside the top four ahead of a trip to People First Stadium for next Saturday's QClash against Gold Coast.

With Lachie Neale (18 disposals) kept quiet for most of the afternoon, McCluggage stepped up in Brisbane's midfield, finishing with three goals from his 26 disposals.

Cam Rayner had a day to remember, kicking two wonderful goals to go along with two goal assists from 20 disposals. His work with the ball, and defensive pressure without it, was as good as any stage of his career.

    00:33

Sydney will lose no admirers from their performance, giving up a 22-point first quarter lead and then having to respond time and again despite the injury setbacks.

The Swans stifled Brisbane during the second and third quarters to take a handy lead into the last, with Errol Gulden (27 and a goal) again prominent.

In a wildly fluctuating first half, Brisbane kicked five goals to one in the opening quarter before Sydney bounced back with six to one in the second to lead at the main break.

Joe Daniher got the ball rolling with three early goals as the home team swiftly moved the ball on turnover.

    00:33

His first came on the run from 55m before he then he twice found space inside 50 to take marks and kick truly.

Brisbane was living in the front half of the ground, winning back Sydney's long exit kicks and able to re-enter to its potent forward line.

Rayner was having a big influence, picking off one errant Nick Blakey kick that led to a Daniher goal before bursting through a Rampe tackle to kick one of his own to have the sellout home crowd rocking.

The Swans showed just why they are top of the table though, striking back with three goals in the opening five minutes of the second quarter.

Gulden was magnificent, kicking a goal from eight disposals in the term to help give Sydney a seven-point advantage at half-time.
