Harding's goal for 2009
Scott Harding may be the solution to the team's small-forward dilemma
The Lions have battled to find a goal-scoring replacement for Anthony Corrie in the pre-season.
Corrie booted 21 goals in 2008 but was traded to Collingwood at the end of the season.
Harding's early season form, including three goals against StKilda and a super goal against Essendon, suggests he could be the man to fill the crumbing forward role.
"I'd love to do that," he said on Tuesday.
"It's a matter of trying to get in a good relationship with Browny (Jonathan Brown) and Braddy (Daniel Bradshaw) and the other guys down there to try and get the forward movement."
The Lions have averaged just eight goals per game in their four warm-up matches, including a lowly four majors against Melbourne.
The names on the goal-scoring sheets after Brown and Bradshaw are all too often single goalkickers.
"It's about trying to support them as much as trying to kick the goals, but the team's obviously looking for guys to chip in kick a few goals a game to give the big guys a hand," Harding said.
The lightning quick 22-year-old spent much of last Friday night's game against Richmond in the midfield.
He only played eight senior games last season, but has worked hard at increasing his speed so he can be used as an impact player.
"A lot of power work, a lot of repetitive speed work over the pre season, running and that type of stuff, just trying to build that so it's a weapon," Harding said.
"I need to support the guys at ground level and when I can, try to get to the midfield to provide the burst of speed in and around the stoppages."
Harding didn't get a chance to re-test his speed in January as the Lions didn't do the usual speed testing.
But the signs are that he has picked up a yard or two of pace.
"I feel like I've gotten faster; I've always had the turn of speed, it was more just trying to be able to repeat it over and over again."
The Lions have been given the weekend off as they prepare for round one against the West Coast Eagles at the Gabba.
They are coming off three straight losses but confidence remains high as they've been finishing off games well, and have had a solid pre-season.
"We've done more combative, body on body stuff, so we feel like we're absolutely ready to go, we just need to tweak a few things to tune up for the season," Harding said.
Dream Team watch – Scott Harding is rated a $190,200 midfielder in Toyota AFL Dream Team 2009.
