Next opposition, St Kilda, faced a disappointing 19-point loss against West Coast last Saturday night at Domain Stadium.
The Saints led by as much as 25 points in the opening term and remained in front for the entirety of the game until the 21st minute mark of the final quarter - when West Coast kicked the last five goals of the game to pinch the win.
St Kilda Coach Alan Richardson said despite the disappointing waste of opportunities in front of goal, he was pleased with the performance of the team’s defence.
“We thought our defence was pretty strong for a big part of the game. I thought by and large we did a pretty good job back there,” Richardson said.
The Club’s influential midfielder, Seb Ross proved his worth in Round 2 after a quiet Round 1 performance against Melbourne.
Alongside Ross was Leigh Montagna, Luke Dunstand and Jack Steven who all fought a fierce battle for midfield possession, showing their ability to provide the forward line with ample opportunity on goal.
New St Kilda full-back Nathan Brown also proved to be an instrumental player in the Round 2 game.
Brown managed to ensure that dual Coleman medallist and Eagles forward Josh Kennedy had minimal opportunities at goal.
Following last Saturday’s match, St Kilda is positioned 13th on the ladder with no premiership points on their side.
The Clubs’ losing streak away from Victoria has now extended to 10-straight games stretching back to Round 9, against the Brisbane Lions in 2015.
The team will be seeking comfort in the advantage of a home game in Round 3 as they come up against Brisbane Lions at Etihad Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Injury Watch
Midfielder Jack Steven was hospitalised in Perth for a couple of nights following post-game scans which revealed he had sustained a punctured lung after a collision in Saturday’s match against the Eagles.
Due to the nature of the injury, Jack was unable to fly after the game and has already been ruled out of this weekend’s clash against Brisbane Lions.
The Saint’s forward Nick Riewoldt is hopeful to make a return in Round 3 following a knee injury sustained in Round 1.
