Ball movement is the focus for the Brisbane Lions as they prepare for their first home game of the season this Saturday night against Melbourne.

Strategy Coach Danny Daly told lions.com.au that ball movement let the Lions down in their Round 1 loss to St Kilda at Etihad Stadium.

“It was disappointing for us because we did a lot right on the day,” Daly said.

“We probably lacked a little bit with our ball movement. It wasn’t really up to the speed we would want it to be and that we needed it to be.

“As a result of that it just affected too many turnovers for St Kilda and they were able to punish us the other way.”

The Saints scored 85 points against the Lions due to turnovers.

“It’s probably a mixture of our decision making and our execution of the skill. This week we’ll concentrate probably a little bit more on our decision making. We’ll play a few more decision-making games,” Daly said.

However, the coaching staff were pleased with the team’s stoppage numbers and contested football, with both areas a key focus for the team to improve on in the pre-season.

Another positive was Jarrod Berry’s performance. The promising midfielder had an interrupted pre-season due to a foot injury but showed no hesitation against the Saints, kicking three goals.

“He’s going to be a terrific player for us moving forward,” Daly said.

"He just works hard the whole game.”

The Lions face the Demons in Round 2. This will be the first time the Demons have come to the Gabba in five years.

“It’s always different when you haven’t played at a ground in so long to get reacclimatised to it,” Daly said.

“Also the heat up here. Again, we’ve got to take advantage of that and hopefully get on top of them early and put them on the back foot.”
