Alastair Lynch is one of the few Brisbane Lions players to have played for both Fitzroy and the Brisbane Bears before they became a merged club in 1996.
He played 306 games for the three clubs and kicked 633 goals.
On June 8 Lynch will co-host the 2019 Brisbane Lions Hall of Fame function in Melbourne and told Mike and Dom on The Roar Deal that it’s an important night for the current playing group.
“That’s what is really important, that the Brisbane Lions are a merged Club with 100 years of the Fitzroy Football Club and 10 years with the Brisbane Bears and we need to continually acknowledge our history,” he said.
“It brings us closer together.”
Lynch, who was inducted in 2012, said hearing old war stories from former players and reminiscing on premierships was what made the night so special.
“It’s great to actually get back and see the icons of the Club from yesteryear and also the current day players as well,” he said.
“Just to hear how their careers panned out and how they go to the Club whether it be the Lions or Fitzroy.
“They are great nights, they are a great night to reminisce.”
Lynch also spoke of the current Lions team and how the younger players have stepped up to another level this year, which has transformed the list.
“Still being a youngish team, they’re going to have their ups and downs,” he said.
“You’re looking at those little things to help you win next week.”
One of the little things for the Lions to focus on each week this year is accuracy in front of goal. The team has struggled in consistency in this area, which Lynch can relate to.
“I had enormous amounts of trouble shooting for goal in my career,” he said.
The pressure, knowing that every person in the crowd was watching you, could sometimes be enormously overwhelming.

“Funnily enough I went to Daniel Bradshaw because he was such a beautiful kick and said ‘show me what you do.’”
Lynch also told the podcast that earlier on in his commentating career he was too harsh on the Lions and fans let him know about it.
“I was probably going too harsh; you don’t want to be,” he said.
“I think we’ve got to remind ourselves as commentators how hard it is to play.”
