THE AFL today advised that the Brisbane Lions Round 9 NAB AFLW Premiership Season match would be relocated due to the ongoing weather conditions in South East Queensland and would now be played at Victoria University Whitten Oval in Melbourne on Sunday
Every effort was made to keep the game at Maroochydore however the unpredictable nature of the storms that have battered the region over the past week, and that continue to do so, made the situation too uncertain.
The Lions will now play North Melbourne at Victoria University Whitten Oval on Sunday 6 March at 12.10pm AEST (1.10pm local time) with the game open to the general public and free to attend.
The match will also be available to watch via the Seven Network.
Brisbane Lions Head of Women’s Football Breeanna Brock said that the decision was made to give some certainty and in the interest of the safety of the broader community in the ongoing volatile weather conditions that are impacting South East Queensland.
“As we continue to navigate the ongoing situation in Queensland, along with the relevant advice on conditions from Government authorities, the decision to move the match was made to provide some certainty,” Brock said.
“While it is supremely disappointing that we can’t play this match at our home ground at Maroochydore, we are looking ahead and will continue our mantra from the past few seasons; anytime, anywhere.
“The recent weather events have been incredibly difficult for so many people, including members of our own team, and as we head south to take on the Kangaroos our thoughts remain here in Queensland with our friends, families, members, fans and the broader Brisbane community as the recovery effort starts.
“We know that the community here is a strong and resilient one, that we will get through this together and in time rebuild, and we will be pitching in to the community efforts over the coming weeks and months.”
There is no action required for those with tickets for the Maroochydore game, a refund will automatically be processed via Ticketmaster.
