The pre-season hype around Keidean Coleman has been put on ice with the dashing defender ruled out for two months with a hamstring injury.
After a standout finals series following a late season switch to half back, the anticipation among Lions fans across the summer has been on the impact Coleman could have to Brisbane’s defence with a permanent move there in 2022.
He was a shining light in the intra-club matches and started the AAMI Series win over the Bulldogs in blistering fashion before injuring his hamstring in the second quarter.
Lions high performance manager Damien Austin said scans on Sunday afternoon revealed some tough news for the 21-year-old.
“It showed a relatively substantial hamstring strain so we will take our time with that, so it will probably be eight to ten weeks,’’ he said.
The Lions finished that game with three men on the sidelines, however the news was better for James Madden and Deven Robertson.
“Jimmy (Madden) was involved in a collision and hyper-extended his knee and his ankle got a bit twisted so there was a bit of swelling there,’’ Austin said.
“But we suspect he will be fine by next week.’’
He said it was more a precautionary measure for Robertson who was back on the track today.
“We got Dev scanned also and it was more of a neural lower back awareness and tightness, we weren’t willing to take a risk,’’ he said.
“He trained today, and we expect him to be back next week.’’
Austin also provided some good news on veteran Dayne Zorko who missed the AAMI Series matches with an Achilles injury.
The skipper is has returned to training and is on target to lead the side out against Port Adelaide at the Gabba in Rd 1.
“At the moment we are tracking really well,’’ he said.
“He will have a decent hit out on Friday and be involved in some play and we are hopeful he will be available for Round 1.’’
