2013 CLUB CHAMPION LIVE UPDATES
8:25am: Daniel Merrett told lions.com.au on Thursday that the cast on his recently broken ankle will be an unwanted accessory on Club Champion night.
9:09am: Greg Davis from The Courier Mail suggests Pearce Hanley and Matthew Leuenberger are well-placed to secure their first Merrett-Murray Medal, but doesn't discount the chances of Joel Patfull going back-to-back. Make your own mind up on who you think will win by checking out our Club Champion form guide.
9:12am: The Club Champion event is just as important for the partners as it is for the players. Watch the exclusive video of Jenna (Tom Rockliff's partner) and Amy (Jack Redden's partner) getting themselves 'glammed up' for the big night.
11:17am: Have you seen what Josh Green is wearing to Club Champs? Watch the LIONS TV clip where Stakes gives him some fashion advice.
12:20pm: Did you know that five of the last seven Club Champions played every game in their Merrett-Murray Medal-winning seasons? Check out our Club Champion history.
2:25pm: Did you know that multiple Club Champions have been crowned just six times throughout the Club's 127-year combined VFL/AFL history. The last time this happened was back in 2001 when Michael Voss and Simon Black tied for the Merrett-Murray Medal just one week after the Club's 2001 premiership triumph.
2:58pm: Lions Legend Kevin Murray claimed an equal VFL/AFL record nine best and fairest awards during his illustrious career with Fitzroy. Ironically the Medal's other namesake, Roger Merrett, never won a best and fairest award despite being recognised as arguably the Bears' greatest contributor.
5:21pm: Check out Tom Rockliff, pictured with partner Jenna, who has opted to wear pink for tonight's proceedings.
6:11pm: The Muir Street boys - Billy Longer, Patrick Wearden, Josh Green and Brent Staker - are ready for a big night.
6:49pm: Will be interesting to see how the votes fall tonight. Joel Patfull won last year's Merrett-Murray Medal with 34 votes, while Tom Rockliff and Michael Rischitelli each won with 37.5 votes in 2011 and 2010 respectively. So I suspect a score somewhere in the mid-30s will be hard to be beat.
7:18pm: Jesse O'Brien and Jared Polec have arrived and are ready for the evening. Can O'Brien win? He thinks not.
7:51pm: The first awards of the evening have been presented, with the Lions pleased to induct three new Life Members - Jed Adcock, Daniel Merrett and Graeme 'Gubby' Allan. Congratulations to the trio who have all made outstanding contributions to the Club.
8:17pm: Merrett, Adcock ad Allan join an exclusive group of Life Members. Check out the full list of Lions Life Members.
8:42pm: Pearce Hanley is the early pace-setter, leading the way with 6.5 votes after four rounds. Brent Moloney is currently second with four votes, while Jonathan Brown's on three.
8:44pm: Speaking of Pearce Hanley, the Irishman receives the Members Player of the Year award. He joins some pretty fair company in previous winners Jack Redden, Simon Black and Jonathan Brown. Hanley proves the members' choice - but can he take out the main prize?
8:51pm: No surprise to see Sam Mayes win the Rookie of the Year award following a stellar first AFL season. Reckon Mayes might feature prominently in many Club Champion nights to come.
9:02pm: We're at the end of Round 13 now and Hanley still leads the count with 17.5 votes, followed by Moloney with 15.5 votes. Redden, Zorko and Leuenberger are not far behind.
9:04pm: Joel Patfull has been named the Most Courageous Player for the second year in a row. He now has as many as Browny.
9:10pm: Matthew Leuenberger gets the nod as Most Professional Player following his inspired return from an Achilles injury. That's Leuey's first ever award on Club Champion night.
9:49pm: Joel Patfull gets his second award for the night after being selected by his teammates as the Players' Player of the Year. He becomes the third ever recipient of the award, after Jack Redden (2012), and Simon Black (2009, 2010, 2011).
10:34pm: We're at the business end of the count, and Joel Patfull has made a late move to join Pearce Hanley at the top of the leaderboard on 28.5 votes. Jack Redden is also within striking distance on 25.5 votes. Looks like being a three horse race to the finish...
10:36pm: Patfull storming home with 10.5 votes in four matches between Rounds 18-21. He caught up eight votes on Hanley. It will all come down to the final two matches.
10:49pm: And the winner is...Joel Patfull. Patfull wins his second successive Merrett-Murray Medal in an incredibly close vote count. He overtook Pearce Hanley, who led for most of the count, by one vote in the final match of the season. Jack Redden finishes third - four votes behind Hanley.
Congratulations to Joel Patfull. Stay tuned to lions.com.au for a full story soon.
