With three kicks in 80 seconds late in Saturday night’s Gabba clash with North Melbourne Zac Bailey, Callum Ah Chee and Dan McStay locked away Brisbane’s 10th 100-point win in the AFL and ended the club’s longest period without one.

It had been 320 games over 14 and a half years since the ninth – a 117-point hammering of Carlton at the Gabba in 2007 when Jonathan Brown kicked 10 goals and Carlton coach Denis Pagan was sacked several days later.

The wait was more than twice as long as it was for the first – a 162-point cakewalk against Sydney at the Gabba in the club’s 140th game in 1993 that remains the biggest win in Brisbane history and the equal 10th biggest in the AFL all-time. In between there was a glut on 100-point wins – three others in the 1990’s and five in the 2000’s.

When North pulled the margin back to 89 points two minutes from full-time on Saturday night after Brisbane had wasted several straight-forward chances it seemed like the wait would continue.

But, almost as if the pressure had eased as the time-clock wound down, first Bailey snapped truly from 40m on the run. AhChee did likewise from 30m and then McStay curled home a 49m set shot from in the pocket which somehow just managed to miss the right-hand goal post.

For six members of the Lions side the club’s 10th 100-point win, all of which have come at the Gabba, was nothing new. Charlie Cameron and Jarryd Lyons played in four 100-point wins with Adelaide in 2014-15-16-17, Lincoln McCarthy two with Geelong in 2016, Nakia Cockatoo one with Geelong in 2016, Mitch Robinson one at Carlton in 2011 and Lachie Neale one at Fremantle in 2013.

But for the other 17 it was a career first.

Especially pleased would have been Joe Daniher, who is no longer the odd one out in his fabulous footballing family. His father Anthony played in four 100-point wins – two each for Sydney and Essendon – while uncles Terry (9), Chris (2) and Neale (1) posted a combined 12 with Essendon.

Harry Sharp, credited with a 100-point win despite not getting on the field, officially did so in his 5th game. But he’s not even close to the quickest in Brisbane history.

Michael Rischitelli, a 111-game Lions from 2004-10 before 132 games at the Gold Coast Suns from 2011-2019, debuted in a 141-point win over Adelaide at the Gabba in 2004.

Fabian Francis joined the 100-Point Club in his second Brisbane game and the third of his career, while Jamie Charman, Matthew Leuenberger, Des Headland, Ash McGrath and Will Hamill also did so in their third game. Tristan Lynch followed in his fourth game and Danny Dickfos and Beau McDonald their fifth.

At the other end of the scale, Daniel Rich, in his 249th game on Saturday night, and Dayne Zorko, in his 211th game, have had the longest wait for a 100-point win. They exceeded  Craig McRae (90 games), Shaun Hart (87), David Bain (83) and Martin Leslie (81).

Michael Voss and Nigel Lappin, with eight 100-point wins, share the Brisbane record for most 100-point wins, from Chris Scott and Justin Leppitsch (7), Alastair Lynch, Jason Akermanis, Marcus Ashcroft, Shaun Hart, Chris Johnson, Alastair Lynch, Tim Notting and Luke Power (6).

Lynch also played in one 100-point win for Fitzroy – in his penultimate game for the club against Brisbane in 1993.

Fitzroy played in nine 100-point wins in 100 years. No player played in more than two of them.

Brisbane’s win on Saturday night was the 305th all-time in AFL history.

Geelong’s Joel Selwood, who broke the AFL record for most games as captain in Geelong’s come-from-behind win over Collingwood just ahead of the Brisbane game, shares the record for most 100-point wins at 14 with ex-Hawthorn captain Michael Tuck.

Geelong Brownlow Medallist Jimmy Bartel and ex-North and Geelong rover Robert Scott each played in 12, while five players played in 11 – Hawthorn’s Gary Ayres, Carlton’s Bruce Doull, Geelong’s Andrew Mackie and Essendon pair Tim Watson and Simon Madden.

BRISBANE’S BIGGEST WINS

#140 - 162pts – Brisbane Bears v Sydney (Gabba) – Round 8 1993

In the club’s 140th win Roger Merrett and Michael Murphy kicked eight goals apiece as the Bears obliterated the Swans  33-21 (219) to 8-9 (57) at the Gabba to post the club’s highest score and biggest win. Ex-Fitzroy midfielder Brendan McCormack had 21 possessions and kicked four goals in his fourth Brisbane game, while ex-StKilda rover Danny Craven, had 31 possessions to top the Brisbane count in his third game for the club. The Brownlow Medal votes went to Nathan Buckley in his eighth game and Queenslanders Matthew Kennedy and Troy Clarke. It was just the second game in which Ron Barassi coached the Swans. He answered an SOS after Gary Buckenara was sacked at Round 4 and Brett Scott coached Rounds 5-6.

#202 - 109pts – Brisbane Bears v Fitzroy (Gabba) – Round 5 1996

It was the last time Fitzroy, coached at the time by Mick Nunan, played at the Gabba. The home side prevailed 24-14 (158) to 6-13 (49). Roger Merrett led the onslaught with five goals in his 150th Brisbane game. Nigel Lappin had 30 possessions and three goals for one Brownlow vote, Michael Voss 28 possessions and two goals for three votes and Craig Lambert 32 possessions and one goal for two votes.  Six Fitzroy players who would later play for Brisbane were on the wrong end of the 109-point margin – captain Brad Boyd, Chris Johnson, Jarrod Molloy, Martin Pike, John Barker and Scott Bamford.

#284 - 100pts – Brisbane Lions v West Coast (Gabba) – Round 17 1999

In their first season under Leigh Matthews, the Lions had beaten StKilda by 89 points in Round 1, but they had to wait 16 weeks to post a triple-figure win. Sitting fourth on the ladder they did a monumental job on faced fifth-placed West Coast 25-16 (166) to 9-12 (66). Michael Voss and Jarrod Molloy kicked five goals, and the Brownlow votes went to Adam Heuskes, Voss and Marcus Ashcroft, who had a career-best 39 possessions – 19 in the first quarter.

#287 - 114pts – Brisbane Lions v Fremantle (Gabba) – Round 20 1999

Three weeks later the Lions turned up the heat on the other WA side – Fremantle. Building on an 11-1 first quarter, they blitzed the Dockers, 15th on the 16-team ladder, 28-13 (181) to 9-13 (67). Jarrod Molloy (five goals and three votes) headed 14 different goal-kickers. Justin Leppitsch and Michael Voss picked up the minor votes.

#314 - 107pts – Brisbane Lions v Fremantle (Gabba) – Round 22 2000

Chasing a percentage-booster in the run to the 2000 finals, the eighth-placed Lions followed a 90-point win over bottom-placed StKilda in Round 21 with a 107-point win over 13th-placed Fremantle a week later. Again Jarrod Molloy kicked five goals, and again Michael Voss (33 possessions) picked up three votes. Simon Black (31 possessions) took two votes and Shaun Hart (28 possessions, two goals) one vote.

#343 – 102pts – Brisbane Lions v Hawthorn (Gabba) – Round 2 2002

Two games after their breakthrough premiership win in 2001 the Lions handed coach Leigh Matthews a special present in his 300th game as coach – a 102-point win over his old club Hawthorn. Alastair Lynch and Daniel Bradshaw kicked five goals apiece while Michael Voss (26 possessions, three goals) helped himself to three votes yet again. Simon Black (28 possessions, three goals) earned two votes and Martin Pike one vote.

#409 - 141pts – Brisbane Lions v Adelaide (Gabba) – Round 16 2004

With three flags behind them but still refusing to take the foot off the gas, they Lions picked up an invaluable 8.9% in a 141-point win over 12th-placed Adelaide at the Gabba to go to the top of the ladder in Round 16. With 18-year-old Michael Rischitelli collecting eight possessions and two goals on debut, they kicked a staggering 21-4 to 2-6 in the second half to win 29-15 (189) to 6-12 (48). Alastair Lynch kicked six goals as Jason Akermanis put together a sublime individual performance for three Brownlow votes with a career-best 35 possessions and four goals. Simon Black (37 possessions, two goals) earned two votes and Luke Power (31 possessions) one vote.

#414 - 113pts – Brisbane Lions v North Melb (Gabba) – Round 22 2004

Heading into the final round of the home-and-away season it was Port Adelaide on top of the ladder with 16 wins and a percentage of 132.0. Brisbane were second with 15 wins and a percentage of 131.9, and StKilda third at 15 wins and a percentage of 127.7. The Lions were drawn to play 10th-placed North Melbourne at the Gabba on the Saturday night, at the same as StKilda played eighth-placed Fremantle in Melbourne and before Port faced Adelaide on the Sunday. Everything was on the line, and the Lions came to the party with a 26-14 (170) to 9-3 (57) win. Daniel Bradshaw kicked five goals and Alastair Lynch, Jonathan Brown and Jason Akermanis four apiece in a tune-up for the finals. Nigel Lappin, Luke Power and Akermanis took the votes in what turned out to be the last game for North – Anthony Stevens, David King and Corey McKernan.

#477 - 117pts – Brisbane Lions v Carlton (Gabba) – Round 16 2007

After four consecutive grand finals the Lions’ golden era had faded. They’d finished 11th in 2005 and 13th in 2006 and, while mathematically still a finals chance two-thirds of the way through the 2007 season the odds were stacked against them. More so Carlton, who visited the Gabba in Round 16 12th on the 14-team ladder with a 4-11 record. The home side led by 29 points at halftime, with skipper Jonathan Brown having bagged three. But in a powerhouse second half Brown kicked three goals in the third term and four in the last and Brisbane piled on 16-8 to 2-4 to win 25-13 (163) to 6-10 (46). Brown took 14 marks and kicked 10-1 in a brutal three-vote performance cut effectively end the 344-game coaching career of Carlton coach Denis Pagan. Nigel Lappin (31 possessions and 12 clearances) earned two votes, and Robert Copeland, in the 124th game of his 143-game career, picked up the only medal vote of his career. Jed Adcock, now on the Lions coaching staff, had 23 possessions and kicked three goals in the biggest win of his career.

#797 - 108pts – Brisbane Lions v North Melb (Gabba) – Round 3 2022

At 11-6 to 5-3 at halftime it didn’t look like being a 100-point win. Likewise when the Lions added only 3-7 to 1-2 in the third term to lead by 56 points. But a 9-5 to 1-1 final term got the job done. It ranked sixth all-time on the list of final quarter scores for the club, headed by a staggering 13-6 to 4-2 against Fremantle in 2001, when the Lions came from nine points down to win by 49. Lincoln McCarthy, who had kicked only one goal in two 100-point wins with Geelong in 2016, booted a career-best five in his 97th goal, while Zac Bailey kicked an equal career-best four. The 108-point final margin was the biggest of Chris Fagan’s coaching career, surpassing the 91-point triumph over Gold Coast at the Gabba in 2019.
