Marco Paparone is still pinching himself after hearing his name called out by the Brisbane Lions at the 2012 NAB AFL National Draft.

Paparone, who was taken with the Club’s second selection (Pick No.23 overall), said he was thrilled to be given an opportunity to start his AFL career with the Lions.

“I was at home with my family and friends just watching (the Draft) on TV - there were about 15 people there altogether,” Paparone told lions.com.au.

“I was definitely keeping my fingers crossed and had no idea what was going to happen, so I was stoked to hear my name called.”

“I’d spoken with the Club a little bit before, but to go that early, and to Brisbane, was a bit of a surprise.”

“They are up-and-coming and did pretty well this year, so I’m really looking forward to getting amongst it and having a crack.”

While a move across the country would no doubt be a daunting prospect for the 18 year-old West Australian, he will have some comfort knowing that at least one familiar face will be waiting for him in the Lions’ camp.

“It is a bit (daunting), but it’s also something I’ve wanted to do all of my life, so I’m really excited about it,” Paparone said.

“I played with Elliot (Yeo) last year at East Fremantle Colts, and have been talking to him quite a bit of late.”

“I’m excited to get over there and see him.”

He will be the third member of the East Fremantle alumni to represent the Lions next season, along with Yeo and midfield superstar Simon Black.

Another person set to take the budding centre half-forward under his wing is none other than Captain Jonathan Brown - a man that has made the position his own for more than a decade.

Paparone said the prospect of plying his trade alongside one of the all-time greats was overwhelming.

“Centre half-forward is where I’ve played all my life and I really enjoy it there,” he said.

“To play and train alongside Browny will be so cool. It’s both exciting and little scary.”
