Voss praises composure
Michael Voss says his younger brigade played a big part in the win over Port Adelaide
In the final term of matches against Fremantle (twice), Melbourne, St Kilda, Richmond (twice) and Gold Coast earlier this season, the Lions have been in a position to win, only to fritter away chances and come up empty.
But on Sunday they fought back from 20 points down late in the third term to kick the final five goals of the match and notch their third victory of the season.
Tom Rockliff had nine touches in the last quarter, Pearce Hanley nine and Jack Redden seven to complement the four-quarter performances of veteran trio Simon Black, Luke Power and Jonathan Brown.
"I'm very happy with how they're going and how they're progressing," Voss said of his younger players.
"We're always after that consistency but their progress has been really pleasing. I couldn't be happier with some of their efforts.
"I thought we had a number of players that lifted well. I thought Ash McGrath in the third, Jack (Redden) was one, Tom Rockliff was one.
"It's one thing to say it's a crucial moment and it's another to do something about it and I think we had a number of players who were able to identify that and change the situation and took it upon themselves to get it done."
Ryan Harwood was another young player who had an influence with his 22 disposals.
Voss said the Lions had worked on their contested possessions in the past month, and on Sunday it showed.
Over the past five weeks they have had the second worst contested possession differential in the competition, but after an early hiding (13-6 in the first quarter) they fought back to win the count 42-40.
Voss said his team's ability to think through pressure situations was crucial.
"We've played better and lost games, we didn't play as well, but won.
"It was an important [match] for both clubs, so to get away with one was good."
