As is the case every off-season, the Brisbane Lions bid farewell to a number of players who had previously made valuable contributions to the Club.
A total of 12 players from the team’s 2014 playing list have moved on, and while some enjoyed longer and more successful careers than others, they will all forever hold a place in our Club’s rich history.
Of the departing dozen, retired champion Jonathan Brown is the only one who won’t be pulling the boots on at any level in 2015.
Brown will instead have his hands full juggling a busy career in the media with part-time coaching duties at the Lions.
Fellow premiership player and 2014 retiree, Ash McGrath, is set to finish his career where it all started having already moved back home to Western Australia with his family.
McGrath was expected to return to former WAFL club South Fremantle, although a recent Instagram post suggested McGrath might be joining his brothers Toby and Cory at the Centrals Blues Football Club.
The Queensland lifestyle obviously appealed to Brent Moloney, who after two years in Brisbane has signed on with the Noosa Tigers, while Sam Michael has also decided to remain local by returning to Redland in the NEAFL.
Jordan Lisle and Patrick Wearden will remain teammates next season with VFL powerhouse Port Melbourne, and look set to line up against James Polkinghorne who has joined Essendon’s VFL side.
Nick Hayes has also returned home to South Australia and will represent Woodville West-Torrens in the SANFL, while Isaac Conway has been linked to both the SANFL and VFL.
Meanwhile, three of the Lions’ 2014 players – Andrew Raines, Joel Patfull, and Jack Crisp – will be wearing opposition AFL colours next year.
Patfull and Crisp were traded to GWS Giants and Collingwood respectively, while Raines was drafted to cross-town rivals the Gold Coast SUNS.
The Club wishes all its former players well at their new homes.
