In the feel-good moment of the sign and trade period, injured forward Gabby Collingwood has inked a new contract with the Brisbane Lions.
Collingwood sustained a devastating ACL and MCL injury in Round 4, seeing her sidelined for the remainder of the 2022 season.
The injury came as a cruel blow for the clever forward, occurring minutes into her first game back after missing nearly two seasons with an ACL injury on the opposite knee.
“Gabby has had to deal with more challenges than most 23-year-olds in the competition,” Head Coach Craig Starcevich said.
“We’re happy to have retained her while she goes through her knee rehab for a second time.
“She brings great energy to the group and has a very sharp football mind. Even though she won’t have an onfield role in Season 7, she’ll have a valuable presence around the team.”
Drafted in the 2017 AFLW Rookie Draft, Collingwood played eleven games across the 2018, 2019 and 2020 seasons before being sidelined with injury.
The Brisbane local got her start in football at junior club, the Jindalee Jags alongside teammate Nat Grider, before moving to University of Queensland where she was then drafted to the Lions.
