Lions Co-Captain Jonathan Brown is no stranger to the big stage having played in four AFL Grand Finals and been part of three premiership-winning sides throughout his 230-game career.

But Brown is one of just three players still remaining from that era – along with Simon Black and Ash McGrath – while the rest of his teammates are yet to be exposed to such an occasion.

In fact, of the Lions’ 24-man squad named for the 2013 NAB Cup Grand Final, only 10 have played in an AFL Finals match.

For the other 14, this Friday night’s clash will be a brand new experience.

Brown said being part of such a big occasion could only benefit his less-experienced teammates’ development.

“It’s significant for us,” Brown said.

“It’s still a big game for Carlton as well, but they get to play a lot of blockbusters throughout the season no matter how they’re going.”

“For us, we don’t get a lot of blockbusters. And even though it is pre-season, it’s still a big game with a big build up.”

“It’s good for the development of our group.”

Brown said the match could also serve as the perfect preparation for the team’s Round One match against the Western Bulldogs, which is also scheduled to be played at Etihad Stadium.

“We’ve had a good pre-season and it justifies the work out on the track if you can have a few wins,” he said.

“A win would give the young players a great deal of confidence, no doubt.”

“It’s important that we have a good start to the season. So we’re looking forward to the opportunity of getting out there on Friday night playing in front of a crowd that will be the biggest a lot of our younger players have played in front of.”
