The Brisbane Lions Reserves have maintained a perfect start to their NEAFL premiership defence, defeating the GC Suns at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast.
In a highly physical encounter The Lions won 28.12 -180 to 10.10 -70, outclassing the Suns across the park.
Unrelenting defence from the Lions in all positions was key to the emphatic win, as they refused to give the Suns any ground despite the Gold Coast providing some staunch physicality in patches.
The Gold Coast matched the Lions for much of the 1st quarter but Brisbane then choked their opposition out of the contest with solidarity in defence equaled by impressive execution in attack.
Callum Bartlett proved to be a handful for the Suns, personifying the team’s excellence in both attack and defence.
Coach Leigh Harding was pleased by his side’s defensive efforts particularly as he felt it was displayed by all of his players.
“It was really good in that it wasn’t just guys in those backline positions that were buying in, there was good defence all over the park,”
“They really shared the load out there, Docherty, Michael, Karnesis, Paparone and Bartlett were all great and snagged some goals for their efforts” he said.
Despite the victory Harding was certain that the Reserves were going to continue to improve throughout the season.
“We can always get better, we will be working on some things because there are still ways we can be better” he said.
Frustrations boiled over in the shadows of fulltime after Patrick Wearden suffered a suspected broken jaw following a high tackle, but the Lions closed out the match in clinical fashion.e Brisbane Lions Reserves will take on the Broadbeach Cats next Saturday at home in Griffin Park, Coorparoo.
