Lions eye new Recruits
The Lions will have a say in who wins 'The Recruit', which concludes tonight
For the past 10 weeks, Brisbane Lions Legend Michael Voss and his team of experts have put a collection of AFL hopefuls through a series of challenges, and ultimately come up with their top three candidates.
They include fiercely competitive midfielder Chris Moreland, speedy South Australian utility Johann Wagner, and 204cm Queensland ruck prospect Bradie Foster.
The Lions are already relatively familiar with Foster, who represented the Gold Coast Suns Reserves side on a number of occasions in the NEAFL in 2014.
What’s more, he also happens to be the son of Daniel Foster, who was recruited to Fitzroy from Tasmania, but never made a senior appearance with the Club.
In a competition first, one of the aforementioned players will be crowned ‘the Recruit’ during Wednesday night’s season finale and earn himself a guaranteed AFL contract.
The eventual winner will be decided by the AFL clubs, who will be asked to rank the players using the traditional 3-2-1 voting system.
Clubs will then be able to nominate whether they intend to draft the Recruit as a Category B Rookie.
In the event that more than one club shows interest, the power will then shift to the Recruit, who will have the option to choose his team of choice.
Lions Recruiting Manager Stephen Conole and his team have been keeping a close eye on the ground-breaking program, and will be just as interested as the fans to see how Wednesday’s special Draft meeting at Crown pans out.
“With so much football being played all around the country, it’s important for us recruiters to spread ourselves as far and wide to get the greatest reach possible,” Conole told lions.com.au.
“One of our recruiters has been regularly watching The Recruit, and has provided us with all the necessary updates to help the Club make an informed decision.
“It’s not as though these three players are complete ‘unknowns’ either. They’ve all been in the system for a while now, and have probably even been on the recruiting radar at one stage or another in the past.
“We’ve come to a consensus as a Club on who we believe is the best Recruit, but as is the case with any Draft, I’m sure every club will have differing opinions.
“We’ll watch with interest to see how it all unfolds, because whoever wins will be part of a club’s list in 2015 – be it ours or one of our competitors.”
‘The Recruit’ finale with be broadcast LIVE on FOX8 from 7:30pm on Wednesday 17 September.
The player selected at this Draft can be placed on club lists as a Category B rookie.
All clubs have the right to participate in the draft meeting, but it is not compulsory to make a bid or selection for a player.
