The Brisbane Lions will finalise their 2012 playing list with up to four selections at the 2011 AFL Rookie Draft which will be held on Tuesday 13 December.

The Lions have the option of adding three new players to the rookie list with Picks No.4, No.22 and No.40, with the Club already committed to drafting NSW/ACT Scholarship player Richard Newell with its final rookie selection (Pick No.57).

Newell was originally signed to the Lions as a NSW/ACT Scholarship player midway through 2008, before moving to Brisbane at the beginning of this season to develop with the Lions Reserves side.

Playing predominantly in the midfield, he earned an NEAFL Rising Star nomination early in the season and quickly developed a reputation as a fearless competitor and supreme athlete.

Newell also represented Queensland at the U18 National Championships, where he was used as an effective run-with player.

Four additional Rookie Draft hopefuls - Justin Clarke, Scott Clarke, Sam Michael and Steven Wrigley - have also been training with the Lions for the past week in a bid to impress the recruiting and coaching staff.

The Lions, however, won’t be participating in the 2011 AFL Pre-Season as the Club has already filled its quota of senior listed players.
