We have plenty to prove: Banfield
Lions rookie Todd Banfield has had a start most rookies dream of, with six goals in his four games
However, the 19-year-old would be happy to just keep playing in an undefeated Lions side brimming with potential.
“It would be good to just keep my spot in the side and do my thing for the team,'' he said.
The speedy midfielder has been playing in the forward line at the Lions and is more than holding his own alongside arguably the best forward duo this season in Jonathan Brown and Brendan Fevola.
“I couldn't ask for much more than to work with the best forward and centre half-forward in the competition, at least I think so anyway,'' he said.
Banfield kicked the Lions' first two goals of their win against the Western Bulldogs. He finished with 2.1 and 12 disposals.
“It was not too bad, my first half was a bit better but the team lifted in the second half,'' he said.
The message at half time from coach Michael Voss had been simple - play your role.
“Everyone just started playing their roles (in the second half) and working together we were playing for each other,'' Banfield said.
The Lions are now a marked team, after emphatic wins over West Coast, Carlton, Port Adelaide and the Western Bulldogs.
“We have a lot to prove. People didn't rate us because we haven't been a top-four side,'' Banfield said.
“It was a good win for us and I hope teams give us the credit we deserve.''
The Western District Swans midfielder was selected with the Lions’ third pick (number 41) in the 2008 draft - the same draft as NAB Rising Star winner and fellow West Australian Daniel Rich.
His current form could see him as the second Lion to be nominated for the award in as many years.
He broke his hand in the 2009 pre-season and was unable to secure a berth in the Lions’ senior side in 2009. He made his debut against the West Coast Eagles in round one after a strong pre-season.
