The Brisbane Lions will officially launch their newest initiative, Daughters of the Den on Friday as they hunt for their first Father-Daughter draft prospect.
The Club will welcome Daughters of the Den to their AFLW Captain’s Run this Friday, with all daughters of past players invited to come and have a kick and some fun with the Club’s AFLW side in Melbourne.
The initiative is being led by 2022 All-Australian defender and Brisbane Lions Academy Strength and Conditioning Coach Nat Grider to connect the young AFLW program with the rich history of the Club.
“For the last seven seasons we’ve been writing our own history in the AFLW,” Grider said.
“And Daughters of the Den is a way for us to connect with the history of the Club and the talented footballers that have come before us.
“We’re very fortunate to have had plenty of former Brisbane Lions, including Starce (Craig Starcevich), Blacky (Simon Black), Crackers (Clark Keating), Brent Staker and Dan Merrett connected to our AFLW program as past and current Coaches, and this initiative is a way for us to connect in a meaningful way with more former Brisbane Lions.”
Brisbane Lions Head of Women’s Football, Bree Brock, said that it’s a fantastic initiative to connect the past and the present of the Club with the future.
“We’ve seen some AFL greats arrive at the Club as Father-Son selections,” Brock said.
“Jonathan Brown is one of them, and how amazing would it be to see another Brown wearing the maroon, blue and gold in the AFLW.
“There’s a whole group of daughters of past footballers who would’ve never had the chance to follow in their fathers’ footsteps as a Brisbane Lion before the AFLW, and now they can.”
If any past players of the Club and their daughters would like to attend on Friday, please RSVP to pastplayers@lions.com.au.
