Greta Bodey made plenty of headlines in Season Seven of the AFLW, but not exactly for the reason she deserved to.
It was her comment at the AFLW Awards, ‘Springers is going off!’, referencing the suburb of Springfield buzzing with excitement ahead of the Lions hosting a home Grand Final at Brighton Homes Arena that had everyone talking.
That throwaway line stole the spotlight from the reason the forward was being interviewed to begin with – being named in the AFLW All-Australian team.
The consistent and exciting on-field performances from the crafty small forward is what really deserved to have the media talking.
Bodey averaged 10.8 disposals, 49.1 per cent disposal efficiency, 2.3 marks, 2.6 tackles, 4 score involvements, and 2.4 inside 50s per game.
As these stats show, Bodey is a consistent performer week in week out, though Season Seven saw her take her game to a new level.
The exciting forward set the tone from the start of the season as she booted seven goals in the opening three rounds, including a career-best three goals in Round 3 against the Gold Coast Suns.
Bodey is best known for being dangerous in front of goal, highlighted by her taking out the Club’s Leading Goalkicker award in Season Six.
However, the 27-year-old showed she can be just as valuable to her team without kicking the goals herself.
The premiership Lion had a strong fortnight across Round 8 and 9 where she racked up 15 disposals in both games.
That ability to find plenty of the ball and averaging four score involvements per game means she is more than a handful for opposition defenders.
As we continue to marvel in Bodey’s continued development and builds an impressive resume which boasts All-Australian selection, a premiership, Club Runner-Up Best and Fairest as well Club Leading Goalkicker – it makes you wonder what she will achieve in 2023.
Based on her current trajectory and in her own words, it might be Greta Brodey that is ‘going off’ next season for the Brisbane Lions.
