While Senior Coach Michael Voss and the Football Department are doing everything in their power to fully prepare the team for Round One on the field, they are now calling for added support from members and supporters seated around the field.

Voss is personally keen to reinvigorate the vocal and hostile Gabba home crowds that haunted visiting teams during the premiership years - an intimidating atmosphere that has subsequently ebbed away over the past three or four seasons.

And the entire Club is behind the Senior Coach’s efforts to reignite the powerful cornerstone of Project Gabba-toir - the iconic Liiiiiooooonnnnns chant.

“The power of the home crowd that willed the boys home against Carlton in that Elimination Final we had last year was fantastic and something that’s really stuck with me ever since,” Voss said.

“So I can’t help but think how we can replicate that same energy and emotion at every single Gabba game and not just when we need to come back from 30 points down in a final quarter.”

“For me personally, that means the Liiiiiooooonnnnns chant echoing around the ground. I remember quite clearly the big impact it had on me during my playing days and I believe it will have the same power to motivate the players today to never give up, to fight back or better still - to keep working together to pile on the goals.”

“To those fans who feel unsure or shy about cheering for the team I say this - never underestimate the power you have to influence games by joining together with the people on either side of you to chant for the players.”

“Yes the players are professional and disciplined and extremely focused on their match roles and all that, but take it from me - they do hear the chants and it does lift the whole team.”

“The AFL competition has become so cut-throat and the difference between winning and losing so slender, that you need every single advantage or one percenter going your way. The Liiiiiooooonnnnns chant is one such factor that I know our members and supporters can use to great effect if they can get the chant going.”

The long and rolling Lions chant was made famous during the 2001 British & Irish Lions tour of Australia when they played the Wallabies at the Telstra Dome. The inspiring nature of the loud and proud chant ringing around the stadium by the visiting British & Irish rugby fans was soon adopted by Lions members and supporters at the Gabba and deployed to great effect from 2001 to 2004.

Become a Lions 'Chant Champion'

Any Lions members or supporters who are keen to champion the cause of the Liiiiiooooonnnnns chant at every Gabba home game this season are invited to email club@lions.com.au so we can follow-up with preliminary discussions about ‘ringleading’ or initiating the chant after Lions goals in strategic positions right around the ground.

So you could end up being one of our official 'Chant Champions'.

Thanks for your support and GO Liiiiiooooonnnnns…
