Camp diary: Ash McGrath

I was up nice and early this morning after a pretty bad night’s sleep with James Hawksley snoring in the bed next to me. There’s pretty much no paint left on the walls or ceiling, but housekeeping were in there today and they sorted it.

Then it was straight off to training for a beautiful reconnection with the Watt Bike. It was a nice little session on that, and I watched the boys do a good Tuesday footy session. Then we came back to the resort for a few meetings as a group before lunch.

After lunch we had a bit of free time so a few of us went down to the beach. We had a good laugh at James Polkinghorne, Pearce Hanley and Sam Sheldon, who were out on the stand up paddle boards trying to stand up. Tom Rockliff and Jack Redden tried to swim out after them and pirate their boards. We’re calling them the ‘pirates’ now. They didn’t end up getting the boards and ended up about 200 metres out so that was good to watch. At this point I’ll throw it over to James Polkinghorne for some special comments.

(James Polkinghorne:) Ash didn’t mention that we went to the beach after training for a recovery session. All the boys got in the water, but Joelly Patfull was sitting on the sand in his Speedos with coconut oil, which had absolutely no sun protection whatsoever - I think it was about 8+. He was trying to recruit as many boys to join in but poor Joel was alone on the towel.

We got back to the hotel in the afternoon and had another team meeting. We’re having a big week here, and we’ve got more meetings ahead of us tonight, but it’s a great start to the pre-season and good to have everyone together again.

The Lions are spending their first week of pre-season at training camp on the Sunshine Coast. Keep an eye on lions.com.au for all the exclusive news, diairies, and video from Noosa.
