Brisbane Lions champion Simon Black received five votes at Monday night’s Brownlow Medal count in Melbourne, further extending the Club record he broke in 2012.
Black has now polled a career total of 184 votes, which is more than any other player throughout the Club’s combined history.
Fitzroy Legend and 1969 Medal winner Kevin Murray is second with 178 votes, while Garry Wilson (161 votes) ranks third overall despite never taking home the top honour.
When Black polled the maximum three votes in the Lions’ come-from-behind win over Geelong in Round 13, he also overtook three-time Brownlow Medallist Bob Skilton as the fifth greatest vote-getter in VFL/AFL history.
But his time in fifth position on the all-time leaderboard was only brief, with eventual winner Gary Ablett claiming the spot with a best on ground performance in the final game of the season.
Ablett’s 28-vote performance at the 2013 Brownlow Medal count took his career tally to 187 – three more than Black.
At the other end of the scale, Sam Mayes received the first five Brownlow votes of his career following a stellar debut AFL season.
Mayes polled two votes in the Lions’ Round 16 win over North Melbourne, before polling the maximum three for his four-goal effort against Greater Western Sydney in Round 21.
Lions fans can probably look forward to hearing the Port Pirie recruit’s name read out more regularly in future Brownlow Medal counts.
