The Brisbane Lions have thrown their support behind a couple budding footballers – Simone Mooney and Rhys Seakins – who represent Fitzroy FC in the respective women’s and men’s Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) competitions this season.

The Lions have long maintained a strong association with Fitzroy FC and enjoy following the progress of the Club’s sponsored players each year.

Mooney, who is in her debut season with the women’s senior team having graduated from the Fitzroy Juniors, has been among the team’s best players each week and was even nominated as the VAFA’s Rising Star back in Round 6.

“Simone’s been amazing this year for the senior team,” Senior Women’s Coach Nathan Jumeau said.

“From her very first game since stepping up from the Fitzroy Juniors’ Youth Girls team, she’s played a massive role in the midfield, also finding the goals with pleasing regularity.”

Like Mooney, Rhys Seakins followed a pathway from the Fitzroy Juniors to the senior team, impressing coaches and supporters first as a member of the Roys’ elite back six, and more lately roaming the wings.

“From the moment he stepped up from the Juniors, he has lit up the field with creative intercept marking from the backline,” Senior Coach Luke Mahoney said. “Or, as a patrolling wingman, with explosive dash and drive, delivering the ball into the forward line with precision.”

The Club are proud to have Simone and Rhys continue this important connection with Fitzroy FC. We wish them well for the remainder of the season and will follow their ensuing careers with interest.

Fitzroy FC’s senior men’s team, who play home games at the famous Brunswick St Oval, currently sit second on the ladder in the very competition Premier B Division and look headed for a deep Finals campaign.

A top-two finish would see them elevated to A-Grade for their first time in their VAFA existence.
