The Brisbane Lions have locked away young midfielder Jaspa Fletcher for a further two years, extending his contract until at least the end of 2026.
Fletcher’s re-signing continues an exciting week for the first-year Lion who was announced on Monday as the AFL Rising Star nominee for Round 19.
Fresh off a career-best performance in Saturday’s 11-point win against Geelong, Fletcher said he was rapt to be remaining a Lion.
“It’s very exciting to be at a Club I’ve always wanted to play for, so to get the chance to sign on for a couple more years is something I am really looking forward to,” he said.
“Due to stress fractures in my back, I missed a lot of the pre-season and had a pretty slow start, which isn’t how I wanted to begin my AFL career.
“But I think that has set me up to be where I am now and showed me how hard I do have to work to earn anything in the AFL.
“Now that I am in the team, I just want to make the most of my opportunities and keep playing good footy, play my role and help the team in any way I can.
“We have a great bunch of boys at the Club, and I am really looking forward to seeing how far we can go.”
The 19-year-old has played every game since making his debut in Brisbane’s Round 14 win against Sydney.
Lions General Manager Football, Danny Daly, said the contract extension was the result of Fletcher’s hard work paying off.
“We are delighted to have Jaspa recommit for another two years,” he said.
“From the moment Jaspa arrived at the Club he has done everything he can to get to where he is, and this new contract is a great reward for him.
“He is an exciting talent who is already playing some impressive football for us in his debut season, and he is also a great young man to be keeping at the Brisbane Lions.”
Fletcher, selected with pick 12 at the 2022 NAB AFL Draft, is a Brisbane Lions Academy product who came through the Queensland talent pathway as a junior with Sherwood.
The 19-year-old is also son of former Lion Adrian Fletcher, who played a total of 231 games with Brisbane, Geelong, St Kilda and Fremantle.
