The Brisbane Lions celebrated a win both on and off field on Saturday night welcoming a host of new Australians.
The Club hosted a citizenship ceremony at The Gabba before our Round 19 match with Geelong, celebrating 44 new Australians citizens from 18 different countries.
Brisbane Lions Community Manager, James Dowling, said Saturday afternoon’s big clash with Geelong was the perfect stage for this occasion.
“Being able to share our game and our home at the Gabba with our newest citizens is always a privilege,” Dowling said.
“Our newest Australians will remember the day they received their citizenship for a very long time, so for the Lions to be a part of this memory is quite special.
“The excitement of our newest citizens and program participants witnessing our game live for the first time is amazing to be a part of.
“It is great to see how welcoming our fantastic footy community is - they came to the ceremony and sat with our newest citizenship during the match to help explain our game.”
Working with Multicultural Australia and the Queensland State Government, the Lions endeavour to promote diversity and inclusion.
Round 19 was also AFL Multicultural round 2023, providing a platform to showcase communities from the local area.
In preparation for Multicultural Queensland Month which begins in August, the Lions helped celebrate the wide range of cultures which help to make up the city of Brisbane.
