In his AFL debut Jonathan Brown had no kicks, no marks and no handballs. Who would have thought from such an inauspicious beginning would come such a champion?
But a champion he was. One of the very best.
Son of a former Fitzroy player, he was a key figure in the Brisbane Lions’ triple premiership sides of 2001-02-03, a three-time Lions club champion, dual All-Australian, a Coleman Medallist as the AFL’s leading goal-kicker, four years the Lions captain, twice voted AFLPA Best Captain, three times AFLPA Most Courageous Player, and even Victorian State of Origin captain.
He played in a fourth consecutive grand final in 2004 and who knows .. if he hadn’t taken a bad knee into the game it may well have been a premiership quadrella.
Through 256 games for the Lions from 2000-2014 he played in the toughest position on the ground at centre half forward and kicked 594 goals, including a Brisbane record 10 in one game. He showed all the skills and at times a level of courage some would call crazy.
One of the game’s most popular figures, he is a boy from the farm who made good in the big smoke and never lost track of who he was. Now an entertaining and influential member of the AFL media and a breakfast radio host in Melbourne, he is a Brisbane Lions life member and a member of the Queensland Sport Hall of Famer, an AFL Hall of Famer in waiting, and now a member of the Brisbane Lions Hall of Fame … JONATHAN BROWN
