Lions' tough lesson in tackling
Brisbane Lions Captain Jonathan Brown said the team was far from satisfied with their performance against Gold Coast last Saturday.
In particular, Brown identified a lack of tackling pressure as one of the main contributors towards the Club almost relinquishing the QClash Cup.
“To be perfectly honest, I was very disappointed with our intensity and pressure, especially in the first half. It was a real let-down because that's the cornerstone of our game," Brown told The Courier Mail on Monday.
"I think we had 10 tackles at halftime. We aim for about 70 or 80 in a game so that's a negative.”
The Lions laid only 36 tackles for the entire match - 12 fewer than the Suns.
Making the stat even more glaring was the fact that one third of that total was contributed by just two players - Jack Redden and Dayne Zorko - who each laid a team-high six tackles, while six others failed to register a single tackle.
The Lions finished more than 20 tackles short of their 2012 average, and 45 short of the 81 tackles laid in the Club’s upset win over West Coast back in Round 10.
Brown and his team-mates know that their intensity needs to lift significantly if they’re to upset the Eagles again this Sunday at Paterson’s Stadium.
“There are a few areas of our game that dropped off a bit and we can't afford to do that against the Eagles,” Brown said.
"It's a big trip and a big challenge but it's something we look forward too. They are a top side and they are on their home deck so it will be tough.”
"But we beat them a few weeks ago and that gives us some confidence.”
