JONATHAN Brown is charging towards a Coleman medal, but the Brisbane Lions skipper is attributing his stunning start to the season to the man most likely to take the goalkicking award from him: new teammate Brendan Fevola.

Brown, who has kicked 17 goals in three games - including five majors against Port Adelaide on Saturday - says the former Blue's intensity is working wonders in the Lions' forward line.

“He’s just a really smart forward; he’s easy to work with, you know where he’s going to lead, and we’re really enjoying it - enjoying working down there,” Brown said of Fevola after his team's 27-point victory over Port.

Any doubts over the pair’s cohesion are now a thing of the past, with another dominant performance from the duo netting eight goals and seven score assists.

And it is the sacrificial aspect of Fevola’s game that Brown believes is making the biggest impact on the team.

“He’s certainly given me a lot of space", he said.

"He’s working very hard defensively as well, getting tackles and giving off those goals.”

The Lions thumped Port early, opening a break of over 50 points before throttling down in the last quarter, when the Power managed five goals to two.

But Brown said the margin was irrelevant, acknowledging any win at AAMI Stadium was one to savour.

“To win by a point, or win by 30 points, is great. We weren’t quite sure where we were at,” he said.

“Port has been one of the form teams throughout the pre-season and in the early rounds, so we thought it was a pretty good benchmark.”

Brown also admitted that the scars from last year’s mediocre performance against Port still stung and provided plenty of inspiration for the team.

“We freshened up well with a nine-day break and came with a great attitude today after what was a really embarrassing performance last year ... That was at the front of our minds”, he said.

The Lions' captain has kicked six more goals than any other player so far in 2010,  and is now paying $4.50 for the 2010 Coleman medal, in from over triple those odds before the season commenced.
