Exciting small forward Caitlin Wendland is set to make her debut against Collingwood on Saturday night as the Brisbane Lions look to continue their winning ways in the 2023 NAB AFLW Season.
Recruited as an injury replacement midway through the 2023 offseason, the small forward had been plying her trade for Central Districts in the SANFLW and was a member of their premiership team this year.
The 19-year-old is known as a consistent tackler across half forward and through the middle, with an impressive ability to play off instinct and possesses a deft touch with footy in hand.
Analea Mckee will also return to the side after missing the Lions 27-point win over Hawthorn.
Jade Ellenger and Poppy Boltz have been omitted due to not meeting professional standards.
“The decision to omit the pair was taken following a breach of team preparation standards,” AFLW Head Coach Craig Starcevich said.
"As a coaching group we were very clear around the challenges this phase of the year presented for us.
“Whilst two players have not met the standards expected, the indiscretions are at the lower end of the scale, and we're sure they'll respond professionally.
“However, this allows an opportunity for other players who have trained strongly and prepared professionally.”
Speaking on Wendland’s inclusion, Starcevich was excited to see her skillset on display at the highest level.
“We’ve been really happy with Caitlin’s progression since joining the club.
“We know she will bring great pressure to our forward line and an ability to create scoring opportunities."
Vice captain, Nat Grider, will also play her 50th game as a Lion.
