Club icon and AFL Legend Kevin Murray might have played a record 333 games and won a remarkable nine best and fairest awards throughout his 18-year career with the Club, but he can certainly relate to the kinds of hardships and disappointment the Brisbane Lions experienced on the field in 2010.

Murray once played in 42 consecutive losses with Fitzroy (between 1962 and 1967) and experienced just two VFL finals throughout his illustrious career.

But in the face of adversity, he stood tall as one of the competition’s finest players and famously won the 1969 Brownlow Medal.

In 2001 he stood proudly in the stands of the Brunswick Street Oval the morning after the Lions’ premiership triumph and basked in the glory of the Club’s first premiership in 67 years.

Now in the aftermath of a forgettable season from his beloved Brisbane Lions, Murray is confident that the Club can turn things around.

“It has been a very hard year for everyone at the Club because supporters want success, but I am sure we have learnt a lot from this season,” Murray said.

“Looking at all those young footballers on the stage at the Merrett-Murray Medal, I am sure that they are going to lift this Club to a much higher level on the ladder in the next few seasons.”

“It has also been a very hard year for Michael Voss and his coaching staff, but they are experienced people in the football world and they will push on to make sure we improve next season.”

On a personal note, Murray will forever remember the 2010 season fondly after achieving ‘Legend’ status at the AFL Hall of Fame Dinner and performing a tribute lap in both Victoria and Queensland respectively prior to the Lions’ Round 21 and Round 22 matches.

“I would like to thank the Club for an amazing day at Etihad Stadium and the night at the Gabba,” he said.

“It was fantastic to be there and see Jonathan Brown play his 200th game. All the players lifted to make sure that we had a win and, most of all, Browny led from the front.”
