A squad of U17 Hyundai Lions Academy members will go up against the ‘Flying Boomerangs’ U16 Indigenous team in a pre-Christmas showdown this Friday 9 December from 7pm at Giffin Park, Coorparoo.

The practice match has been scheduled to assist the Boomerangs with their preparation for the 2011 Youth AFL Oceania Cup which is being held in Fiji from 13 - 17 December.

The Boomerangs will compete against Oceania and South Pacific representative teams on the tour, while the squad will also engage with the Pacific players in cultural exchanges.

There will be some familiar faces in the Boomerangs’ corner this Friday night, with three-time Lions Premiership great Chris Johnson taking the reins as coach with assistance from dual Brownlow Medallist Andrew McLeod.

The U16 Indigenous team will also feature three Queensland players, including Joel Hagan who is currently part of the Hyundai Lions Academy program.

Toowoomba-based Hagan started Auskick in 2008 and went on to be selected in the U12 Queensland side in that same year. He is currently enrolled at St Joseph’s Nudgee College in Brisbane on a sporting scholarship and has been part of the Lions Academy since 2009.

For the Hyundai Lions Academy, the match presents an exciting opportunity for the players to compete against a national U16 side and put their AFL development to the test.

"We were only happy to oblige when approached to participate in this match," Lions Academy Manager Luke Curran said.

"It gives our guys an opportunity to play an actual  match against quality opposition. We'll certainly use it as a learning and teaching tool for the kids."

All Brisbane-based Lions fans are invited to come along this Friday night and watch some potential future AFL stars (and Lions recruits) live in action.
