Vodafone Brisbane Lions stars Jonathan Brown and Jamie Charman went head-to-head with TeamVodafone drivers Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup in a remote control car race around the Gabba on Wednesday.

The sporting quartet were also joined by a couple of die hard TeamVodafone V8 fans for the six-person race.

While Brown and Charman shot out of the blocks quickly, it was Whincup that seemed to best navigate his controls around the miniature raceway circuit.

The surrounding media and staff that had turned out to witness this unique event were far from safe as errant cars regularly found their way among the spectators.

With little more than two laps remaining, it seemed that Charman was set for unlikely victory ahead of his more fancied rivals. However, the Lions ruckman made one too many wrong turns (including at one stage driving beneath the stage) allowing for three-time Australian Touring Car Champion Lowndes to take the chequered flag in front of Whincup and a fast-finishing Brown.

Charman and the two V8 fans were forced to watch the celebrations from afar as the three placegetters took to the dais and showered each other in champagne.

It was a successful event for the club’s major sponsor, who brought TeamVodafone and the Brisbane Lions together before what promises to be an important weekend for both teams.

Brown, Charman and their Lions team mates are preparing for their Round 16 clash with Carlton on Sunday afternoon at the Gabba while Lowndes and Whincup are gearing up for Round 7 of the V8 Supercar Championship Series at Queensland Raceway this weekend.

Lowndes is in good form having won the previous round in Darwin, while Whincup will celebrate his 50th touring car round start.
