Lions Vice-Captain Tom Rockliff says that first-year sensation Dayne Zorko is a ‘natural’ footballer who almost slipped through the cracks.

The 176cm pocket rocket has been a shining light for the Lions this season, with his attack on the football, tackling pressure and goal sense lauded by teammates, commentators and fans.

Starting AFL football at the relatively late age of 22, Zorko could be forgiven for struggling with the fitness and intensity required to play at the top level after just nine months in the system - but fans have seen no sign of struggle.

Speaking on Channel 7’s AFL Game Day, Rockliff said that Zorko’s natural football talent far outstripped any concerns over fitness.

“He’s come in and had an impact straight away, as we thought he would,” Rockliff said.

“He’s a natural talent and that’s what you want - if you’ve got a bloke that can play footy, you’ve got to give him a chance.”

“He’s got his opportunity and grabbed it with both hands.”

While Zorko is now part of the furniture at the Lions, he still cops a ribbing from him teammates over his years as an opponent playing for local NEAFL side Broadbeach.

“I remember playing him in my first year in the Reserves and I think we tagged him, and we actually had a punch-on that day,” Rockliff said.
