The Brisbane Lions are proud to showcase the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to bring to life all the amazing things the Club does both off and on field.

As part of a new series, the Club will highlight staff members from various departments, their roles, background, challenges and advice, to give a snapshot of what it is like to work for the Brisbane Lions.

Lisa Groom is the current Football Administration Officer, which includes VFL Team Manager, AFL/AFLW Player Appearance Manager and general AFL admin duties leading many of logistical tasks faced by football teams.

Lisa even goes as far as to hold up the signage on game day and ensure every player interchanges correctly throughout the game, master of the behind the scenes, Lisa ensures everything runs smooth day-to-day, allowing the football team to focus on footy.

We sat down with Lisa as she gave us insight into what it is like to be a part of the Lions pride.

How long have you been at the Club and what different roles have you been involved in?

I started at the club in 2018 as a Membership Casual finishing up at the end of the 2019 season. After completing my Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science degree and returned back to the club as a full time Membership Coordinator in 2021. Three months into that position, I became the Membership Supervisor (November 2021 until January 2024). I am now currently working as Football Administration Officer after transitioning into the Football Department.

What is are a few of the best things about working at the Brisbane Lions?

The opportunities that the club present. Mid way through 2023 – I was selected by our Executive Team to attend the Women in Football Operations Summit in Melbourne. I came back from that conference and sat down with our Human Resources department explaining that I wanted to get into Football Operations and move into the Football Department.

Four months later, I was offered a position in Football Department demonstrating our Club’s willingness for their people to succeed.

The culture within the Football Department, as a woman, with two young kids, working in a male dominated industry, has been nothing but welcoming and accepting, led by the General Manger of Football, Danny Daly. I love the bond that I have with the coaches, staff and players. We are a family. I genuinely feel like this is where I belong.

What are some of the challenges of working in sport?

The irregular schedule – things are constantly changing all the time and nothing is ever the same. Working irregular hours / weekend work (outside of the 9am-5pm hours) is another challenge, however, when you love what you do, it becomes irrelevant. I’m very lucky that I have a great support network around me and the Club understands that family does come first.

What are some of the lessons you’ve learnt during your time at the Club?

You must always be two steps ahead. Whilst focusing on the current week, you always need to be looking ahead and planning for the weeks to come. Losses can be hard which is why you should celebrate the smallest of wins.

What is some advice you’d give to young people wanting to get involved in the industry?

Take every opportunity that comes your way. Get involved as much as you can – even if it’s volunteering your time to start with. Don’t be afraid to speak up, if you want something, ask for it. If you put the time and energy into the Club, the Club will reciprocate.

What would be your goal song?

Good as Hell - Lizzo

Favourite player/players?

I don’t think I can have favourites in my position but any player that turns up/puts their hand up for an appearance are my fav.

Favourite moment or experience from working at the Lions?

Attending the 2023 AFL Grand Final & also working the 2023 AFLW Grand final and being part of the premiership.

Working closely this season with the VFL team and coaching staff has been a highlight, the players and coaches have been incredibly welcoming and it is a great environment to be involved in.
