It is with great excitement the Brisbane Lions confirm Levi Ashcroft has formally agreed to join the Club as a father-son selection at this year’s AFL National Draft.
The 17-year-old, who is a talented midfielder with the Sandringham Dragons in the Coates Talent League, informed the Lions of his decision on Wednesday.
He will now follow in the footsteps of his father Marcus Ashcroft, who is a Lions legend who won three premierships in his 318 games for the club.
The decision will also see him arrive at Brighton Homes Arena to join older brother and Lions midfielder Will Ashcroft - who was also a father-son selection in 2022.
Ashcroft said he was thrilled to be joining the Lions and continuing the family legacy.
“It’s an honour and a privilege to be able to say I am joining this great club,” he said.
“Our family has great connection to the club, with Dad’s legacy, but also over the past couple of seasons as Will has started his career here as well.
“To be joining him, and potentially playing for this club together, would be a dream come true for us but there is a lot of work to be done before that happens.
“I have been made so welcome by the people here - from Lachie Neale and Harris Andrews to Josh Dunkley, Charlie Cameron and Hugh McCluggage and all the younger guys.
“I feel so privileged to join a group like this. I just can’t wait to get to work and earn the respect and trust of my new teammates and coaches.
“And that starts this weekend when I get to play for the club in the VFL. I hope I can make my family and the club proud in the future.”
Lions General Manager of Football, Danny Daly said it was also a special day for the Club to have Ashcroft confirm his commitment.
“To have a young player like Levi coming to us with as much talent and potential is beyond exciting for our club, our members and fans,” Daly said.
“Levi has performed strongly at various levels this season and we look forward to helping him develop into an AFL player within our program.
“What also impressed us is that not only is Levi a quality player, but he is also a quality person and someone that will help enhance the culture at the Brisbane Lions.
“The Ashcroft’s including Marcus, Bek, Will, Levi and Lucy have already been a part of our Brisbane Lions family and now that will continue for many more years.”
The Lions confirm Ashcroft will line-up for the Club in the VFL against the GWS GIANTS at Brighton Homes Arena on Sunday.
