Two-time AFLW premiership winning midfielder, Cathy Svarc has signed on for two more seasons with the Brisbane Lions, keeping her at Brighton Homes Arena until the end of 2026.
A 58-game Lion, Svarc has played an integral role in the Lions recent AFLW premiership triumphs with her trademark tackling pressure and toughness in the contest making her one of the hardest one on one match ups in the competition.
“I’m excited to be staying a Lion for another two seasons, there is nowhere else I’d rather be,” Svarc said.
“We’ve built a really strong culture at this Club and I’m excited to continue to grow that with the list we have now and the young kids coming through it is an exciting time to be a Lion.
“I’ve played majority of my footy with so many of these girls and many of the relationships I’ve built will last well beyond football which is incredible.
“We as a group are really focussed on trying continue the success we’ve had over the last few seasons, and we’re driven to climbing that mountain again this year.”
Despite gaining a reputation in the early part of her career as a tagger, Svarc has grown in the last few seasons to be a threat on both sides of the ball with her run and carry proving difficult to stop.
Lions AFLW senior coach, Craig Starcevich was full of praise for Svarc’s contribution to the team.
“Cathy’s journey with us has been extraordinary really. She spent 2019 on our top up list before joining us in 2020, going on to be a dual premiership player,” Starcevich said.
“Her explosiveness around stoppage makes her a vital part of our midfield group, but equally valuable is the calmness and intelligence she brings to her leadership role.
“She should be immensely proud of the player she’s become and we’re very fortunate to have her with us for a few more seasons.”
