The Brisbane Lions have replenished its key forward stocks by signing former Gold Coast SUNS goalkicker Sam Day ahead of 2025.

Day joined the Lions on Friday as a delisted free agent through the Telstra AFL Pre-Season Draft.

The 32-year-old was signed by the Lions following an extra list spot being made available due to the retirement of premiership forward Joe Daniher.

Day, a member of the SUNS inaugural squad after being taken with Pick 3 in the 2010 draft, kicked 117 goals in his 155 games.

The key forward booted 10 goals and averaged five score involvements in his five AFL games in 2024, before injury ended his season early.

Brisbane Lions General Manager Football, Danny Daly said the club was thrilled to sign the 196-centimetre forward to its list.

“We are really pleased to have Sam join our club as we see him being a valuable addition to our squad and a quality person off field,” Daly said.

“Sam is a proven key forward at AFL level, and he has a lot of experience which will be beneficial, particularly to our young forwards.

“We all look forward to welcoming Sam when pre-season starts and then having him help us in our pursuit of further success in 2025.

“We would also like to welcome Sam’s wife Ali and their two children Charlotte and Teddy to the Brisbane Lions family.”

Day said he was eager to start the next chapter of his career with the Lions, following 14 seasons down the highway with Gold Coast.

“I am really excited to join the Lions as obviously the club is in a great spot just coming off a premiership, and I can’t wait to get there and meet all the players and staff,” Day said.

“It seems, looking in from the outside that there is a great feel and culture around the place, and I’m thrilled to be joining that.

“Over my time I’ve gone through a wide range of experiences, so the ability to offer my knowledge and teach where I can.

“I also want to fit in seamlessly to a forward line that is already up and going, be a big presence and to make my teammates around me better.”

Day said he was ready to hit the track for preseason training with the Lions and show his new teammates and coaches what he has to offer.

The veteran forward has also set himself some goals for the season ahead.

“I would love to play a full season and then a finals series, it’s been a long career without any success,” Day said.

“The club is primed to be a contender for years to come so if all goes to plan then playing on after a successful 2025 would be great.”

The Brisbane Lions also re-listed defender Darragh Joyce and promising youngster Darcy Craven via Friday’s Telstra AFL Rookie Draft.
