The Brisbane Lions VFL side have been handed their first loss of the 2025 Smithy’s VFL season, going down to Richmond by 22 points at Punt Road Oval.

The Lions gave up the opening two majors for the match and were never able to hit the front as the Tigers ran away 12.13 (85) to 8.15 (63) winners.

Henry Smith opened the Lions account in the first term as Youi Brisbane Lions Academy product Fergus McFadyen was able to reduce the margin to nine points at the first break with his only goal for the day.

Three behinds to start the second quarter and four to start the third term proved the difference as the Lions booted 15 minors scores for the contest.

Brandon Ryan was able to kick the only Lions major for the term as the Tigers led by 25 points at half-time.

James Tunstill was strong again through the middle of the ground with 25 touches and aided nicely by Smith in the ruck, who won 33 hitouts, collected 25 disposals and booted three majors to be one of the Lions best.

Ben Thomas booted an early goal for the Lions to breathe life into the contest after half time but inaccuracy was again a factor, as the Tigers kicked four goals in a row to lead by 40 points at three quarter time.

Tom Doedee made a successful return to football, collecting 13 touches and three marks in his first game in over 12 months.

Darcy Gardiner kicked his only goal as Smith and Ryan both booted their second majors for the afternoon as the Lions threw everything at the Tigers in the final term.

The Lions will now get the week off with the League bye before hosting Collingwood at Brighton Homes Arena on Good Friday in Round 4.
