Quality displays by Jason Roe and Scott Clouston were not enough to save the Suncoast Lions from a 25-point defeat at the hands of Redland at Victoria Point yesterday.

The form of Roe in particular was one of the highlights of the match, the athletic defender coming through his second game back from injury very strongly.

Pitted against the Velocity Sports Cup leading goalkicker Mick Aitken, Roe held the Bomber to 1.1 before his opponent left the field with a shoulder injury in time-on of the second term.

Roe marked strongly one-on-one and generated plenty of rebound when opposed to Aitken and later against the resting ruckmen.

It was a polished display from a man who had not played a game before last week in 2008 due to quad problems.

Clouston has been inspirational in recent weeks with his willingness to accept the ruck role in the absence of Joel Tippett and did everything he could to lift his side yesterday.

The rookie list player provided a keen contest against much bigger opponents Ryan Williams and Jason Paxman, and worked particularly hard around the ground.

He took a number of marks on the 50m arc and kicked superbly from long range, finishing with four goals.

His final goal leveled the scores at the eight minute mark of the final term, but it was the home side who finished the strongest, running out 15.19 (109)-11.19 (85) victors.

The Lions created enough chances, but skill errors at the wrong time proved costly at both ends of the ground.

They butchered a couple of goalscoring opportunities by overdoing the handball late in the final term, and some poor delivery by foot saw turnovers at the other end cost them on the scoreboard.

Midfielder Chris Schmidt started the game brilliantly and was clearly best on ground at the first break.

Redland rotated two players off the bench with the specific aim of shutting him down thereafter, although Schmidt was still trying to lift his side in the last term.

The Lions began the game with 11 listed players, down five on recent weeks, but lost dangerous forward Haydn Kiel in the opening five minutes of the match.

They nonetheless ran the ball hard, with Phillip Smith continuing on his good form from last week and James Hawksley thwarting many Redland attacking moves. Hawksley was moved onto new Bombers recruit Antal Reti late in the last quarter after the Darwin recruit lit up the final term.

Brad Dalziell also won plenty of ball in the midfield and spent time tagging Redland’s prime mover Phil Carse.

Suncoast have a bye this weekend as part of a split fixture to cater for the AFL’s Community Round and should maintain their place in the top four irrespective of next week’s results.

They remain a game clear of Morningside and Redland, with the Panthers facing a tough game against Southport next Sunday.
