Young gun Emily Wastle is one of the up and coming stars of girls football in Queensland and will be profiled today in the lead-up to the official AFL Women’s Round matches this weekend.
Playing for the Western Magpies in Brisbane’s open girls competition, this 16 year old schoolgirl has many strings to her bow. This includes being a junior representative player, an AFL Auskick coach and one of the 700 nationally accredited female AFL umpires.
The South-East Queensland U16 Vice-Captain and member of the Female Football Academy has great hopes to take her football career to as high a level as possible, starting with the State Championships happening later this year.
“I would really like to make the State All Stars team at the championships in Cairns at the end of the year,” Wastle said.
“That’s my goal and playing open football has really helped my game because it’s fast and much more physical.”
After moving from Melbourne, the Year 11 Corinda High School student has been impressed with the popularity of the sport amongst the girls at her school.
“We have competitions at school every now and then and it has been getting bigger,” Emily said.
“More and more girls are playing which is really good for the sport.”
Emily will be competing in the U16 State Championships at Cairns in November with an honorary State side being named after the carnival.
